How do you feel about the use of this word to describe certain groups/people in the punk scene and what experiences do you have if you have been on the receiving end?

Personally my view is that the word Elitism can be used and is used the majority of the time by people who think not laughing at racist, sexist and homophobic jokes is "PC". Theres nothing politically correct about not being bigoted just as theres nothing elitist about not wanting the punk scene to be associated with bigots.

elitism has more to do with others thinking they are better or more righteous then you are, be it punks, politicians, any group that looks down on others and excludes people.

Elitism, as in 'thinking of oneself as elite' or 'thinking of oneself as superior'.
    'Nough said, methinks... lol

Being elitist can be terrible annoying and keep many people out of the scene, because they are not "good" enough. Some actually rejects everybody with mohawks or piercing as "trying to hard" and such.

But on the other hand, the alternative to elitism is assimilation. If the scene is to survive, it has to keep to some of the ideals that founded it. If anybody can just come in and redefine the scene, it may lose it's meaning for many, to commercialism and a new wave of commercial people following the newest wave.

Just look what happened to the goth scene - there's a long way from Joy Division, Siouxsie and the banshees and Bauhaus, to Marilyn Manson and Nightwish.

I'm so blessed to be in the Denver scene. Punks here are so fresh faced and scarce that anyone new is immediately met with open arms.

I've meet some elitist punks before. They decided to pick on me because I was a straightedge anarcho-punk which made me sad because I thought they cared about freedom and equality too. All they cared about was getting drunk and oppressing others who were different. Totally not punk rock.
