I'm portuguese and the government decided to legalize gay marriage.

I hate this government, I think it's fascism in desguise but I agree 100% with this law though I think many people here really don't support it. My mom says "it's un-natural and marriage should be about a man and a woman who can raise a family" and I had some arguments with her about this issue.

The portuguese have kind of a conservative mentality in some aspects, I think.

What do you think about this? And are there any portuguese or spanish people here, I'd be glad to know what you'd have to say about this :)

yeah but this thread is about the legalization of gay marriage in portugal, it's not the same thing ;)

i think we should let this topic open... if someone disagree then just close it again

BTW i think we need a forum for politics news/actuality

no prob, just trying to keep things tidy, but if i'm vetoed i won't get upset.

Off topic but i was thinking we need someone to do a sort of Weekly anarcho spin on current news topics, like Weekend Update on SNl but with an Anarchist's take and satire onit, then we can discuss it all week until the next batch, (and of course in the meantime people can still post headlines as they see fit too.)

I was going to pm you Anx but I forgot.....duh... And I think its great that Portugal has done this because if they are a "conservative' Catholic type nation and they have come to realize how basic it is for all gays lesbians, transgender, and genderqueers to have a right to ruin their lives with marriage....er I mean be happy, then what excuse does any other country have not to?

I agree that, conservative or not, no nation as an excuse to keep gay marriage outlawed, it's just homophobic and idiotic.
Portugese people are usually very conservative and catholic and that's why many of them don't agree with this new law. There are protests against it and people really seem to be very homophobic, and even people I thought were okay with it, really aren't.

The government chose to enable gay marriage without doing a referendum, they didn't let people vote for or against it (like they did with abortion, which was legalized 3 years ago.)

And all drugs are decriminalized here too. I don't know, it's just a mindfuck for me, because we have all these enablements but, still, whenever I talk to an adult or an elderly (who constitute the majority of the portuguese population), they seem kinda conservative.

Sounds like some progressives have taken over policy in the Govt. which is a good thing in an extreme conservative state. I've noticed Brazil also has some very socialist policy going on lately......

Yea, in paper, we're a socialist country too.
Though there's a huge hole between the very rich and the poorest of the poor, it's not fair, neither it is socialist.
I think that they take this measures just to give out the idea that they're "liberals" and "listen to the people" but it's just bullshit. They intend to waste millions of tax payer money to built new rails and TGV's from Lisbon to Madrid, I think. When there are much bigger things to take care off! it just goes to show that the rich-ass corporations and industries are the ones who really control the country, not the politicians, they just donate their faces.
