Say No to Racism! Confront neo-Nazis!

On Saturday March 19, Calgarians will be gathering to show that we will not stand for racism or any other kind of oppression in our community.

Our rally last year was successful and was held to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racism, to denounce the continued presence of racist gangs in our community, to bring attention to systemic racism, and finally to celebrate our …diversity. Since that day many events have occurred here in Calgary, events which have shown that the struggle against the neo-Nazi movement in Calgary is far from over.

The Aryan Guard have re-organised and re-branded itself as Blood & Honour/Combat 18 (B&H).

A new neo-Nazi gang, Volksfront (VF) has moved into Calgary. Originating in the U.S.A. they have set up shop in British Columbia, and now seek to organise in Calgary.

In November, 2010 the residence of Bonnie and Jason Devine, both spokespersons for ARA Calgary, was invaded in the early morning by five individuals armed with hammers and pipes. Besides damaging property, they savagely attacked Jon T, also a member of ARA Calgary, and swarmed Jason, repeatedly beating him in the head in an attempt to kill him.

Neo-Nazis have now announced that they intend to hold a ‘White Pride‘ march on March 19th in downtown Calgary.

It cannot be denied or ignored: the neo-Nazi movement in Calgary is alive and growing, with three groups now actively organising. But we cannot give into fear!

The day will start with a celebration of our community’s cultural diversity in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racism. Should B&H (Aryan Guard), VF or W.E.B. march in the afternoon, we encourage all who are willing to confront them.

This event is open to all and is intended to be confrontational but non-violent.

Leading Canadian bonehead Kyle McKee is in jail. Kyle “has been sentenced to 60 days in jail after pleading guilty Thursday to three criminal charges. McKee, 25, pleaded guilty to uttering threats and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public in connection with an incident on Feb. 13, and for assaulting a woman at a prior party” (White supremacist gets 60 days in jail for threats, Calgary Herald, March 19, 2011). The threats were made to anti-racist activist Jason Devine, who in November last year had his house broken into by five masked men who proceeded to assault Jason and another man. (The five remain at large.)

Because he’s in jail, the micro-fuehrer was sadly unable to lead the 12 or 15 neo-Nazis who gathered in Calgary on the weekend to celebrate WPWW Day by staging an abortive march. 100 police kept the neo-Nazis from jackbooting very much further than their assembly point and separate from the crowd of approximately 200 or so anti-racists who had gathered in opposition to the march. Elsewhere, Josh Wingrove has written an article on White nationalists/neo-Nazis in Calgary. It has its flaws (oi! is a musical genre, not another name for boneheads; Volksfront is a US-based ne0-Nazi network with franchises in several countries) but provides some insight into the kinds of losers attracted to the ideology and the yoof gangs which form around it. In the consolidation of a neo-Nazi milieu in Calgary, “Kyle McKee’s leadership has been key,” explained Paul Fromm, a stalwart and mentor of the extreme Canadian right (Calgary’s in-your-face neo-Nazis take to the streets, Globe and Mail, March 19, 2011).

A prominent Canadian Holocaust denialist, Fromm toured Australia and New Zealand in December last year at the invitation of the Australia First Party, meeting with and addressing small audiences of other racist cranks in Melbourne, Sydney and Christchurch. AF is standing two candidates in the upcoming NSW state election: Tony Pettitt in Riverstone and Tony Robinson in Mulgoa.

Anti-racism demonstrators outnumber neo-Nazis at Calgary rally

Little more than a dozen white supremacists marched for their cause in downtown Calgary this weekend, in a show of force much smaller than some past demonstrations but large enough to raise questions about the public face of the neo-Nazi movement in this city.

A competing rally of about 200 anti-racism protestors also took place on Saturday. About 100 police officers were able to keep the two groups separate, avoiding a repeat of the violent clashes between the two sides that took place in 2009.

Calgary’s mayor, Naheed Nenshi, applauded police and defended his city. “Racism of any kind is unacceptable in Calgary and not tolerated by the vast majority of Calgarians,” he said in a statement. “Unfortunately, there may be some people who wish to express their hatred. However, such people do not reflect the views of Calgarians as events clearly show.”

Two neo-Nazi supporters, who dressed primarily in black, many with faces hidden, were arrested – police said one was detained over an outstanding arrest warrant and that the other was arrested on a concealed weapon charge.

The largest factor in keeping the numbers down may not have been who was there, but who was wasn’t. Kyle McKee, who Calgary police call the “micro-fuhrer” and leads Blood and Honour here, is in jail, leaving white nationalists in Calgary without their chief organizer.

The reduced numbers shouldn’t be taken as a sign that such groups are waning, according Warren Kinsella, who wrote Web of Hate, a book about organized racism.

“They don’t need a whole bunch of people. They actually prefer to have smaller numbers because it makes detection and infiltration easier to avoid,” Mr. Kinsella said in an interview. “They operate on the basis that small numbers can do large harm.”

Calgary was alone among Canadian cities in hosting a neo-Nazi demonstration on Saturday. But Mr. Kinsella, a former Calgarian, argued this is no reason to believe white supremacists have abandoned those cities.

“There is a danger into being lulled into a false sense of security by minimal numbers,” he said.

While noting it is unfair to associate white supremacy with only Calgary, Mr. Kinsella slammed the way police have approached the matter. The Calgary police service employs a hate-crimes co-ordinator, rather than a dedicated unit.

Paul Stacey, a duty inspector with Calgary Police Service, said that the hate-crimes co-ordinator works with CPS’ diversity resources unit. “This is not something we’ve ignored,” he said, arguing that the city has a low rate of hate-crimes. The city’s hate-crimes co-ordinator was at the rallies Saturday, “taking names and… figuring out who’s who,” Mr. Stacey said.

White supremacy “is not a real strong movement,” in the city, he added.

Calgary’s in-your-face neo-Nazis take to the streets

Late Saturday morning, a crowd of dozens, perhaps hundreds, will converge along quiet, downtown streets. They’ll wave flags, carry signs and chant slogans, all broadcasting an unmistakable, unsettling message.

White pride.

There’s only one city in Canada where such demonstrations of this scale take place: Calgary, described by many as the centre of the country’s neo-Nazi movement.
