Help with Prison Phone Justice Act.

This petition is important to me because I have been incarcerated and I have found that many prisons and jails charge exorbitant rates to use the phone. Since the prisons and jails do not pay inmates enough to afford them, these costs are passed on to the families, many of which have lost their primary breadwinner. The apologists for the carceral state try to justify it by saying that if you do not want to be charged an arm and a leg to use the phone, then you should not have committed a crime. However, this overlooks the fact that (a) excessive phone costs is not a judicially imposed sentence, (b) many inmates are in pre-trial detention and have not yet been found guilty of a crime, (c) the punishment is to be deprived of liberty, not fleeced by greedy corporations. You may think that it's a waste of time to petition Congress or try to reform the system instead of overthrowing it but I figure that any little thing that we can do to help a brother when he's down is a good thing. So please consider adding your signature to the petition.
