    Palimpsest Biography

Band members: Ante Holmqvist, Frederic JohanssonThere are multiple artists/bands called Palimpsest:
    1: Australian jazz band.
    2: Swedish hardcore/metal band.
3: Experimental Death Metal from New Zealand / Portugal.

    1) Pal – imp - sest: a parchment, or the like, from which writing has been partially or completely erased to make room for another text...
... the jazz project from singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Tyrone Noonan of No.#1 charting, ARIA-award-winning Australian band george...
Palimpsest creates a timeless, yet current sound that takes the listener on an entrancing journey across continents, cultures and song writing eras, fusing elements of swing, Latin, soul, folk and modern grooves and melodies.
“I’ll Bet You Thought I’d Never Find You”, from the band’s debut self-titled album, has been licensed as Track 1 on both the CD and vinyl versions of the top 2008 UK Nu Jazz compilation Messin’ Around Vol. 5; while the remix version is set for release on UK radio/club DJ Russ Dewbury’s upcoming “Jazz Rooms” compilation (Mr Bongo Records).
The band’s music has been featured on many influential radio programs and club playlists throughout the UK, Europe and Australia, including Russ
Dewbury’s Nu Jazz Spectrum, his popular Brighton Jazz Rooms events, The Jazz Cafe In Camden and Karsten Johns’ “Vinyl Vibes” radio program and club in Koln, Germany.
Palimpsest has performed at many high profile events including the “Andy Warhol Up Late” series at the Queensland Art Gallery (2008 Andy Warhol Major
Retrospective exhibition), the official opening of the Qld Government’s new Millennium Arts Project, The Qld Design Awards, Woodford Folk Festival, The St
Kilda Festival, Ed. Qld Creative Gen. launch (QPAC), The Brisbane Burlesque Ball (Tivoli Theatre), The Caxton’s Big Day In, Brisbane Powerhouse, The Brisbane Jazz Club, the Port of Brisbane Authority, Sirromet Winery, Springfield Lakes, The Press Club, Maggie Black’s, The Zoo, The Vanguard, Brass Monkey (Syd), Bennett’s Lane, Corner Hotel (Melb), Tilley’s (Canberra).
Bringing his soaring and powerful vocals into this arena, Tyrone has been backed by some of the country’s top jazz musicians since the project began in
the late 90s, initially inspired by artists such as New York pianist Brad Mehldau.
In Oct 2004, Palimpsest released its highly-acclaimed self-titled album (Shock), debuting in the AIR National Indie Top 10, followed by a successful national tour including performances on Good Morning Australia and Mornings With Kerri-Anne (national TV).
The band can perform as trio, quartet or sextet, utilising a core group of musicians including Tyrone (vocals), jazz virtuoso James Sherlock (guitar), AJ Hall/ Georgia Weber (double bass),Toby Wren/Josh Oakes (guitar), Rich Seymour/ Joe Marchisella (drums), and Isaac Hurren and Mikael Strand (horns).

This is what the critics have had to say!

    Ian Paulin, IndieCds.com

From the first bar Tyrone Noonan enforces his right to be considered one of Australia’s most talented jazz practitioners. Palimpsest is riveting –
positive and well-constructed arrangements are lead from the front by thoughtful, gripping vocals. This set is alive and kicking even in its tender moments. This is a significant
CD for Australian jazz and probably well beyond.

Noel Mengle, Album of the Week review, The Courier-Mail

    “Jamie Cullum interprets jazz
standards and a Radiohead tune (with serious marketing budget) and sells millions.
Tyrone Noonan from george does down a similarly eclectic path, makes a better record,
plays some great shows around the country and has to fight to register on the
mainstream radar. Australia, you sometimes want to shout, have a look under your nose!”

    Tony Hillier, Rhythms Magazine Australia

“Tyrone’s soaring vocals and impressive octave
range, like his sister’s, are tailor-made for jazz, with some of the country most promising
young instrumentalists providing the platform, most notably the Romaniuk brothers, and
guitarist Jamie Clark... Tyrone shows a real flair for Brazilian cool via Antonio Carlos
Jobim’s Bossa benchmark “How Insensitive” and scat in the more up-tempo “Agua De
Beber... His phrasing on the swing standard “Lullaby of Birdland” would do credit to a
veteran. His reading of “Black Is The Colour of My True Love’s Hair” is exquisite.”

    Megan Yarrow, Time Off Magazine

“Palimpsest is a cohesive and lyrical album of seriously
smooth and sexy sounds – a fusion of originals, jazz standards, Brazilian samba rhythm
and intelligently reworked Bowie, McCartney and Vince Jones classics. ...It is a glowing
tribute to the quality of his own composing skills that Noonan’s ethereal ballad “Beauty
Of All Things” by no means pales in comparison to the established pieces.”

Sound Bites Review, The Northern Star

“Tyrone Noonan’s album Palimpsest offers an
entirely excellent repertoire of contemporary jazz sounds and textures. In particular, a jazz
brush is waved over Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” with delicious effect. Noonan’s vocals are
fabulous/easily comparable with Vince Jones; rich, golden, funky and full of emotion.”

    Dave Hayes, The Drum Media

“...I’m discovering something quite compelling about the
album....You’ll (at least) find yourself challenged by the self-titled release...There’s plenty
of diversity on this album. The 2nd track, a cover of Australian jazz great Vince Jones’
    America, is an absolute corker.’’

    2) Palimpsest was formed in Tranås in 1987 by Fredrik Grehn (Rea Respirator), Jimme Karlsson and Ante Holmqvist (who had just moved there from Jokkmokk). Mathias Adamsson eventually joind as singer. About six months later Frederic Johansson joined as second guitar player.
After heavy rehearsing and gigging the first demo, Eat More Meat, was released as a cassette by Grehn's fanzine Byt Ben. After a few more gigs, they grew tired of the band and decided to put it on ice for a while. This first line-up of Palimpsest played hardcore influenced by US-american 80's hardcore bands like Circle Jerks, Dag Nasty, Articles of Faith and others.

In late '89 Palimpsest was reformed with a new line-up and a heavier metal sound. The new line-up consisted of Grehn, Ante, Frederic (who took over vocals) and Berit "Bibban" Aztor on bass.
During 1990 Palimpsest recorded two demos, one which was released, and got them plenty of gigs, one at the Hultsfred festival. Their song "A non-working hero" wwas "demo song of the week" in radio channel P3's program Inferno.
The band was also featured on a number of compilation tapes and records.

In fall of '91, the whole band moved down to a house in Trelleborg, so they could rehearse often and be the best. Sadly, that's not how it turned out, mostly for economic reasons, and all members moved out of the house after about six months. When Grehn moved back to Tranås and the remaining members to Malmö, the rest of the band tried to keep going but it never went very well.
They released a single, "Worn Out", in 1992 and after that they dissolved.
