If you’re lucky, you’ll experience occasions during your lifetime when a band comes along that’s like no other. A band whose music is impossible to replace. The band fills a gap you didn’t know existed. Dawn Ray’d was one such band. Their uncompromising blend of message, vision and music, of love/anger, light/dark, was exceptional. Only Godspeed You! Black Emperor could match Dawn Ray’d’s expression.

For the anarchist looking for a band to be inspired, to feel community, to vent anger, sadness, fuel for the struggle, to feel hope and joy, Dawn Ray’d was the obvious band. When other bands met injustice with balanced debate around the dinner table, Dawn Ray’d burned the whole damn house down, leaving only ashes of the opponents.

Dawn Ray’d got better over the years, and they were needed in their genre (the black metal community has been characterized by fascist and far-right bands). Their expression reached near perfection with the album “To Know The Light”. Every tone, sentence and image is important. The album is thoughtful, beautiful and meaningful. The band’s latest release, would prove to be their last, is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the year. Never before has the anarchist message been clearer. The album is imbued with burning hatred towards all hierarchies. No one listening needs to doubt what the band thinks about the state, animal oppression, cops, patriarchy, fascists, or capitalists.

The fact that Dawn Ray’d recently announced that the band is finished feels terribly sad, inexplicable. It feels like losing your best friend, the one who always understood and comforted. At the same time, it is somehow self-evident. As the logical end of an anarchist, anti-fascist black metal band. Just like your militant group of friends, who for a time did actions no one else could, but who were not meant to be around forever, Dawn Ray’d leaves the stage at the right time. Dawn Ray’d was always more than a band. They were the comrades who fought with you against the crap society, who advocated any means imaginable. That more and more people came to value the band for their contribution to the anarchist environment, paradoxically only makes it more logical that Dawn Ray’d is ending. We don’t need gods, we need comrades. And just as the struggle changes over time, the forms of expression for how we fight also need to change. Otherwise we won’t win any battles.

Those who embraced Dawn Ray’d over the years will never forget the band. Those who have yet to hear them have a world to discover. The music has stopped, but we continue to listen. The band has ended, but what they stood for lives on. As a consequence of the band’s existence, life became a little better, the struggle more militant. This is not the end, it is a new beginning. As the band themselves say, see you in the streets. Let the fires burn as a signal!

    Thanks for everything Dawn Ray’d!
