CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Palestine supporters forced Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to call the first of two recesses when tensions rose during Monday night's city council meeting.

"I would not want someone to treat me in a way that makes me feel less than and that’s what happens when we speak over each other," Lyles said.

It started shortly after those in support of Palestine shared their stories, encouraging city leaders to feel the pain caused by the escalated violence in the region.

"Every single person I mentioned to you has not made it out of this war," one Palestine supporter said. "Every day I am reminded I do not matter."

As Jewish speakers took to the podium, comments scattered across the room. Lyles eventually asked two people to leave the chamber. When they refused to be escorted out, Lyles stopped the meeting for a second time.

"With that being said, this meeting is recessed," Lyles declared. "We will empty the chamber."

Some within the Jewish community were also escorted out, but from a different entrance due to safety concerns. Meanwhile, the meeting continued with Lyles and other city leaders in a closed session.
