i am in a argument with my brother where i stated that the poor pay more taxs than the rich, the rich used to pay more before reagen and still could live in commodity but while aiding the poor, to tell you the truth i heard this in a documentary about the goverment that i forgot the title

What i am searching is who pays more? but everywhere i go says that rich pay more DUH!

I understand if you have more money you pay more but i wanna know who pays more %wise, if a poor makes $100 and $10 go to taxs he paid 10% tax, so does the rich man who makes $1000 pay $100? or more or less?

Usually tax is paid on a sliding scales, in Australia the brakcets are
    i) $0 - $6000 - no tax
    ii) $6001 - $37000 - 15 cents per dollar over $6000
    iii) $37001 - $80000 - $4650 + 30 cents per dollar over $37000
    iv) $80001 - $180000 - $17550 + 37 cents per dollar over $80000
    iv) $180001 and over - $54550 + 45 cents per dollar over $180000

If we take a median figure in each of the brackets, except the last because it is open ended, then the tax payed overall and percentage is as follows:

    i) Wage = $3000, Tax = Nil, 0%
    ii) Wage = $21,500, Tax = $3225, 15% tax overall
    iii) Wage = $58,500, Tax = $4650 + $6449, 19% tax overall
    iv) Wage = $130,000, Tax = 17550 + 18500, 28% tax overall

So, in answer to your query, the sliding tax scale means than you pay more take as your wages increase (0, 15, 30, 37, 45 cents in the dollar for each bracket you fall into) but also as your wage increases you pay a greater amount of tax as a percentage of your total wage.
