It was, the people that signed created and signed the constitution were the well-read, well-fed, well-wed, and the well-bred. There was no common man at the constitutional convention, it was the elites of society. If you actually look at the differences between American society pre-revolution and post-revolution the only difference is who controls. Nothing changed at all, it was a rebellion against England's rule and taxation; nothing more. Tyranny is Tyranny.

If the founding fathers and the men who were at the Constitutional Convention gave a shit about the people, then the people would actually have a voice, opposed to how it is now where votes are controlled by unions and corporations.

(If you want more things on American history, Read Garraty's The American Nation (It outlines all of American history in depth and it made me realise how fucked as a country we are and how stupid we are) )

To say the votes are controlled by the unions is slightly problematic, especially in light of 'elected officials' attempting to smash unions in Wisconsin at present.

There is no doubt though that unions often function only to mediate the terms of exploitation; and that the union bureaucracies are rife with wannabe politicians and careerist hacks (limiting myself here to the 'Global North', as taking on union leadership in say Colombia or the Philippines is more likely to get you murdered than into parliament).

Of interest may be (but from an Australian perspective) Ben Rosenzweig and Liz Thompson's 'Trade Unions: In the National Interest', Melbourne Black #5, pp. 14-22.

I am sorry for the confusion, i stated that very crassly and slightly unfounded. When i meant unions, i meant the big ones such as the NEA and the UAW.

the NEA in America is the biggest supporter of the Democratic Party, and the biggest funder(?) of the Democratic Party, and majority to all of the teachers in the US are apart of the NEA. So if a Democratic Candidate wanted education reform and to regulate Tenure (because it is abused sadly), guess who will take away majority of their funding away for said Candidate?

I don't oppose unions, just corrupt and large ones. We need unions to protect our workers from further abuse, but to the point where their striking for a higher pay wage, regardless if they don't really work during the day at all (As in the fucking UAW), it's just wrong (i'm not for big business at all, but doing shit like that is just fucking wrong, and essentially as unjust as big business)

No, I'm saying when you get paid $100,000 a year + benefits to essentially work an unskilled labour job for 50 hours a week (15 of which you sleep), and strike when your boss docks your pay a bit or gets rid of a benefit, is bad. Trust me, the Auto-workers here in MI do this; I'm not making this shit up. I know several family friends who are Auto-workers and do as i stated. It's wrong to essentially rape an industry just because you can and some higher ups at the UAW tell you to do so. Why do you think they're laying people off here and there? it's because they can't support >20,000 people that get paid $100,000 a year for a job that any man can do, when your business is creating and marketing shit cars.

This is where a union goes to fucking far, and where they aren't doing their intended purpose. This is where a union becomes a bunch of greedy bastards hungry for money and power. Do you know who else is hungry for money and power? The industry and corporations that they're raping.

I'm sorry that this is ruining my image here, where I side with the wrong side, but the UAW goes too fucking far. The NEA is no better, and those are the only 2 unions that should be regulated or destroyed.

never mind that workers have died for that benefit or wage increase.......unfortunately, I think you are more influenced by your father than you realize.

Anarcho-Capitalism is an oxymoron, since Anarchists have always claimed to be Socialist and have opposed Capitalism and Free Market and fought for workers rights, and Ayn Rand opposed Anarchists and Libetarians and was for free market and Capitalism and against workers rights.

ayn rand and her offspring alan greenspan are the typical examples for those "atheist" good christians whose only function is to spread the "moral" superiority of capitalism in a rhetorical transfigured neo-spiritual way, geniusses for hire, completely ignorant to the real crimes happening - the lord don't loves you if you're poor...
some of her writings about "objectivism" remind strongly of these 19th century "only the strong survive"-biologist scribblings or the stuff the nazis made up from nietzsches "übermensch".
she was never an anarchist, strictly giving the state the role of the last "defender of individual rights", and she never recovered from her childhood trauma when her family in russia "fell" from the upper middle class right into the fangs of those evil "red" collectivists in leningrad. somehow i'm not surprised that she left russia in the early 30's for the u.s. to become a hollywood writer...
now the "ayn rand institute" tries to influence the us-politics with her "radical liberalism" - hu! :o

As far as I remember she died of cancer while public health service cared for her and it took quite some time untill she was "discovered" as "america's most influencial political writer" - hu! o_O o_O
Now the ayn rand institute is the spearhead of the campaign against obamas health reforms... isn't the world wonderful?! :ecouteurs:

Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, and Libertarian oppinons etc.

    Did anyone read this book?

I didn't but I know about the author Ayn Rand, and I think she really does not understand government or the real world. Her entire libertarian anti-communist propaghanda book is very much full of shit, and I feel that she is trying to justify capitalism and elitism with this psuedo- philosophy called "objectivism" which by the way doesn't make ANY fucking sense( it basically says that art and creation are the main purpose for humans or something and that capitalism is the only system where this can be achieved, or otherwise. It's obviously ripped off of real philosophies and manipulated to suit her oppinion)/
This bitch is obviously sore and confused from being knocked down from middle rulling class in Russia to working class when the soviets took over. I didn't even have to read the entire book to realize that it's garbage, i've read quotes, summaries, etc, and saw the trailer, which looks like the most hilarious movie of all time.
She based an entire grim spiteful grudging philosophy on an event in her life, she says that things like altruism, and caring for others is irresponsible, and that we should be totally self indulged, careless greedy, trolls.
I hate Ayn Rand, thanks to her we have to deal with a whole generation of annoying self contradictory stupid libertarians who think removing state regulation in capitalism will free us all. What load of nonsense. Most libertarians I've encountered never had to struggle in their life, and are the offspring of rich middle class families.

There is nothing wrong with caring for people. It's completely natural to do so.

People argue that capitalism helps people put their greediness to use.when actually capitalism creates greedy people, and greedy people do nothing but corrupt, and spare a dime to the poor when it looks good.

I just HATE HATE libertarians, they are so juvenile. Seriously.

I probably sound really stupid to you guys, because I really am not good at sounding like an intellectual know it all or expressing all of my thoughts and points. I'm sorry. I stopped trying to look smarter than everyone in the 8th grade.

even if i almost completely agree with you, skulldrix, calling the fallen princess "this bitch is obviously sore" isn't really necessary - aren't we civilized people anymore?
she never recovered from loosing her privileged living and the future promised to her according to her pre-revolutionary social standing in the upper middleclass, maybe she was traumatisized, maybe she was plain dump/egocentric to the extreme, but she was still a human and we should respect this - even if she wouldn't respect us.

    Ann Rand, a Libertarian; LOL!
    Ann Rand was against Libertarianism.
The only political idealogy Ann Rand supported was Laissez-faire Capitalism, which is shit.
Both Ann Rand and Capitalism suck.
People who like Ann Rand and want Laissez-faire should go to Somalia and they will get their wish.

    Argueing with Libertarians

    Typical Libertarian arguments I've encountered

    - Greed is selfishness, and people are naturally selfish, so that makes greed good.
-Altruism is slavery and devotion to other people's interests or needs, making it wrong.
    - Money is simply a tool for means of exchange a more precise and fair evolution of the barter and trade system, and without money people would use guns.

and Milton Freidman in gernal equating greed with self interest

Anyone ever see the straw man thing with them too?

    oppinions oppinions

We have acknowledge that libertarians are kind of a big issue, and If we can't put up strong arguments against them, then we can't fully succeed.

    Re: Argueing with Libertarians

First of all "Libertarians" is not specifically belonging to these idiots, only in the United States are people stupid enough to associate Libertarianism with these morons...every where else on the planet Libertarians are anarchist...

Second of all there are brilliant arguments against them all over the internet check out http://libcom.org/ and learn a little something.

and Third of all this topic is already covered so I'm moving your thread

and Ben her name is Ayn Rand.... :ecouteurs:

You are right, living in the United States, libertarian is very much distorted.
I often forget that it means something good to everybody else. my bad.

But still, "free market capitalists" I should say, need to be logically destroyed.

the situations ayn rand puts her characters in are bonkers like the rich kids who both inherent factory's and run them in opposite fashions over a bet,
or the fountainhead about the architect who was better than everybody so he is persecuted for his sheer greatness give me a break, but the best part is people apply these completely unrealistic situations to real life. it would be funny if this wasn't real life :ecouteurs:
