E123 Biography

British post-punk band formed in 1977 in Wythenshawe, Manchester. A Certain Ratio took their name from the lyrics of [a=Brian Eno]'s song "The True Wheel", taken from his album "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)" (1974). Their first records were released on the independent label "Factory Records" (known by Joy Division, New Order, etc.). On their first releases they sound like a successor band of Joy Division. After a trip to New York in the year of 1980, they quickly developed towards funk. The album "To Each" (1981) is characterised by African percussion, funky drums and bass as well as a sepulchral mood in the style of the Joy Division. After the release of the album "Sextet", which continued the sound of the successful album, singer Simon Topping left the band. He turned to an uncompromising jazz funk sound. Over the years the band approached the catchy Popsound with funk elements.

Band members: Denise Johnson, Donald Johnson, Tony Quigley, Martin Moscrop, Liam Mullan, Jez Kerr, Matt Steele
Band ex-members: , Simon Topping, Andy Connell, Peter Terrell, Martha Tilson

Label - Mute

Please note, some Mute issues also carry an EMI logo. This is not a label and EMI should not be added as a label, it instead indicates that Mute was part of the EMI Group.

Founded in 1978 by Daniel Miller, Mute (also known as l36339) releases various forms of music, with an emphasis on electronic and experimental pop. In May 2002 the label was acquired by the EMI Group. In 2010 Miller did an agreement with EMI to handle Mute as an independent label again, licensing the trademark from EMI via his company Mute Artists Ltd., but EMI kept the rights over Mute's back catalogue. After the EMI Group was dissolved, in 2012 l206061 acquired l636's back catalogue.

Branch offices exist in Germany (l168349) and in North America (l36296).

Mute has spawned many regional and special-interest sublabels, some of which are still active. One offshoot, Parallel Series, even became independent of l636 Mute also operates Mute Bank Mail Order, which sells the label's merchandise directly to consumers. Mute Bank published two issues of iMute Statement/i, a softcover book that details the entire discography of the label and includes band profiles and photos of release artwork.

Another label strongly associated with Mute is Toast Hawaii, run by Depeche Mode's Andrew Fletcher.
