I've been doing poetry gigs for about a year now but I've always just stood still, nervously reading from a book. At the last gig I played, I suddenly came to the realisation that I don't actually READ from the book, I just use it to hide behind. I tried reading from memory once before and I totally froze up but I really feel as if I could put a lot more energy into my poetry if I could just overcome the fear. I thought about maybe wearing some sort of mask, like maybe a balaclava, just so I don't feel all eyes are on me. Anybody else ever have a problem like this? If so, any advise?

By the way, here is one of my poems. I am reading it off the screen but that's just because I had only just written it. I have almost all of my poems memorised now.

Here's me reading from memory at home. Still have yet to try it at a gig.
