Don't think I ever had a t-shirt with band name on it, painted band names on my jacket few times, but never liked the idea that I was just a walking ad.

--> Oh, and black denim jacket, can't you just use dye? Might have to bleach it first.

Just check out your local opshops for a denim jacket? I just picked one up on my way to work today for $10nzd.
And patches, they really don't take long to make!
Or pay a mate to make some?

Have you tried this one yet http://www.crustpunks.com/? One of the easiest ways to make patches is to get some black cloth and bleach. Use a Q-tip to write the name of the band on the cloth and to get some detail, buy a bleach pen. I think Clorox still makes them.
