New to Illinois scene... not sure where to start

I'm trying to get more involved in the scene here in Illinois now that I have the freedom to do so and am not confined to just listening to music in my room. I go to school in Springfield, but I'm originally from the Chicago area. I dont know how but I managed to find a place where they have really good local shows here in Springfield (Dumb Records), maybe cuz the area is just smaller here so it's easier to find, but I haven't had much luck in Chicago. Does anyone know where to look? Doesn't have to solely be punk either, I enjoy lots of kinds of rock and metal music.

I spent a number of years in Illinois- love/hate.
Friend named karlos put on most of the great punk shows. IMO.

I misread you post ( or I had one too many).
If you're down in Springfield - you can try Bloomington , but Champaign would my be choice since your in central Illinois.
10 years ago and Champaign had a couple great Anarcho bands.

Im in southeast illinois. You near the wabash river?

Update: I finally graduated, came back home to the Chicago area, and finally found a couple of decent venues that I've attended and been keeping my eye on.

I honestly miss the ChiTown punks.... basement shows. ..,.even CobraLounge.... i don't think Apocalyptic Crust Fests / Children of the Crust Fests/ Barn Fests are taking place anymore, but if you hear of any good Fests in Illinoize ..please share.

About an hour and a half away. If you've heard of Mattoon I am about 15 minutes from there.
