Mental Institutions are run by the same men who run the prisons. People get incarerated in the prison for what kind of state of mind they were born with. Mentalism is a form of discrimination and mental institutions should be abolished like prisons because they are authoritian concentration camps for insane people. Support the right to be insane. Abolish Mental institutions! Abolish prisons!

Hello brother. Just had to react because I live in a mental hospital and have done for two years now. It's not as bad as you think and most people are there voluntarily, just like rehab clinics and suchlike. The thing is, people are placed in mental institutions if they are a danger to themselves or their environment, not because they're different. The gross majority of mental patients just want to be helped because it's very hard to cope with some of the dark recesses of the human brain, even without some form of chemical imbalance. It's not like Shutter Island and One Flew anymore, and it never really was.
    Peace.

Not all people in mental institutions are put there voluntarily.
Not all people there are dangerous; some just have a mental condition and are put in the mental hospital even if they don't want to.
I am against involuntary admittance to mental hospitals.

You do know what strait-jackets, ECT, chains hanging from walls and rooms full of naked men shitting on the floor in abject squalor were used for, don't you? Asylums have existed for hundreds of years, sir, and even in the twentieth century not all of them were run terribly well. I'm sure you're in a nice facility, but that's the point. The places where people can come and go (more-or-less) as they please have always been nice. The places people are dragged kicking and screaming aren't nice at all.

I just don't know what we are suspossed to do with Sociopaths. Serial killers, rapists. I'd rather see rehabilitaion than prison...I know there might be less rape/murder with less crime but it will always be there and i'm curious how we would deal with those people?

I've been dragged kicking and screaming all right. But I know that when I'm in the wrong state of mind I can do some seriously fucked-up shit to myself and others. If it were up to me I wouldn't be in this place but they lock my bedroom door at night. But I know that I'm here for a reason.
And as for straight-jackets and chains and whatnot, yeah asylums were like that. But that doesn't mean we should abolish institutions which can help people.
And I know that some places are terrible. I've been thrown from one loony bin to another over the past two years and I've had electro-convulsive therapy, which is basically frying one's brain to get the crazies out. But there are regulations and regular inspections.
Some people are not in the right mental state to recognize that they aren't. One cannot see one's own eye without a mirror. Of course I'm against straight-jackets and involuntary injections and ECT and all that, but not psychology and psychiatry in clinical admissions.

Well, nobody here is disagreeing with you! That's not at all what's at issue here. Nobody is saying "End psychiatric treatment". Re-read the OP.

So what happens to those who are so mad that they cannot make a rational decision? I am referring to those who believe (for example):
that they have a devil inside them which can only be removed by cutting their stomachs open,
that other people are the devil and should be killed,
that their life is so pathetic and worthless that they deserve to die.

Regarding forcing injections upon people, what do with those who persistently try to harm themselves in an attempt to kill themselves? The injections are used to calm them down.

I have worked in a psychiatric hospital (in the UK) and those are some of the situations I have had to deal with. After being treated, these people have all gone home, and said "thank you". Not because they were institutionalised, but because they were grateful that they were still alive and sane again.

Okay, see I agreed with Ben that institutions run like for-profit-prison enterprises are a bad thing. That's as far as it goes, though.

Otherwise, I agree with the rest of you. Somebody needs to be able to look after people who can't look after themselves. The angry little primmo boy inside me says it must be nature's way of thinning the herd, but the rational modern dude outside says, we have the technology and the understanding and the ability to help people when they lose their marbles, to refuse help would be evil. Also, Ben, what the hell about being racist? You've lost me.

I've realized that us anarchists (i'm even guilty of this at some points) accuse someone of being homophobic or racist just cause we disagree with their views.

That guy supports big corporations and capitalism? RACIST!

That guy likes popular football teams? RACIST!

That guy is a cop? RACIST!

Don't get me wrong. Often times we are right (I'm sure i'm not the only one who has noticed there are a lot more homophobic high shcool jocks than not) but we are guilty of judging to sometimes. It's human way.

You might want to take your own advice and think about what you're saying. There are countless people in prison who have done nothing wrong. It's not because they "messed up." It's because they live in a system with numerous illogical and draconian laws. There's a huge difference between the dualities of "legal vs illegal" and "right vs wrong"

So to accept prisons with the assertion that "if you end up in prison, obviously you messed up" is pretty bogus in my opinion.

There are plenty of people in prison who don't deserve it. I refuse to believe in the prison system. I wonder why you do? You seem to have a lot of very conservative views. What do you hope to learn from your experience on this site?

He's probably on here thinking he was an anarchist but is soon going to realize he's against our views. I've seen that happen multiple times when talking to people about anarchism in real life. They say they are anarchists then argue against some of the core views of anarchism when i talk about it with them.

Yea that seems to happen quite a bit. It also happens in reverse. I've talked to people who are essentially anarchist in their views but have a skewed view of anarchism. They'll say "if we had anarchy, their would be nothing stopping people from just killing you" or words to that affect, and don't realize that almost every other thing that comes out of their mouth is anarchist in essence.
