I mean, I'm not trying to make light of the guy's situation or abusive relationships in general, it's just the first thought that came to mind.

I believe that if a woman physically assults a man then he should be able to defend himself. I don't think he should sit there and take it, but he shouldn't beat the shit of her either. He should just push her away or something like that.

Screeching Weasel break up over incident at SXSW

The members of Screeching Weasel (Dan Schafer, Adam Cargin, Justin Perkins, and Drew Fredrichsen) would like to offer a sincere apology to our fans, our management (Ben Perlstein @ Motivation Management), Chad and Vanessa @ Fat Wreck Chords, Deborah Toscano @ Devil Dolls Booking, The Scoot Inn and it's employees, all the support bands, and anyone else negatively impacted by the scene that developed in Austin last Friday night, March 18th.

The un-calculated act put forth by Ben Foster leading up to and including the violence that erupted on stage is seen by the band as shameful and embarrassing. The sentiments and actions expressed were completely out of our control and in no way represent the band members' view points or moral compasses. As a result, the band has discussed at length and has come to the conclusion that as a group we will not likely be able to muster the dignity to attempt a live performance as "Screeching Weasel" in the for-seeable future. We each look forward to re-evaluating our involvement in the band as we move forward if we are given the opportunity.

Collectively, as musicians, we feel that it is imperative that the music do the talking. We have made every effort as a group to ignore the gossip, Internet feuds, and general negativity that has (at times) overshadowed what we believe being in a band is really about. It is pointless to try to place the blame where those actions are concerned and we don't care to get involved other than to say we don't condone or support any of it. We are very proud of the effort we put forth in creating what we believe to be a fantastic new album in "First World Manifesto" and it deeply saddens us that we will not be able to bring that excitement to audiences around the world in the form of a live show in the coming months.

We all feel extremely deflated following this public spectacle and would no doubt be doing the music an injustice if we were to force a performance. As friends and band mates, we are absolutely positive that Ben regrets his actions last Friday night. We have no doubt that his apology is sincere and that if he could take it all back, he would. We don't wish to place any more hardship upon him with our decision to discontinue our involvement at this time, but it is something that can not be avoided.

In the future we would love to see these wounds heal and for the opportunity to play together in a positive light materialize. If Ben feels the need to immediately carry on with a new cast of characters--we support his right to do so. Again, we would like to thank our fans for all of their past support and hope that they will continue to support us should the opportunity to perform as "Screeching Weasel" present itself again in the future.

    Thanks for everything,

    Dan, Adam, Justin, & Drew

Without any disrespect to either sex... there are physiological differences between men and women. Often women are smaller in size, and naturally their bodies are weaker. This is not true 100% of the time, I recognize that many women are stronger than myself. But what I am getting at is that, physical strength between the two is often in favor of a man. Also, the female nervous system is slightly more sensitive. Females experience pain differently and, generally have a lower pain tolerance (because of more sensitive nerve endings, not because they are 'girls')
Sexual dimorphism is prevalent in many species, and this difference in shape and build is not to be ignored.
A female must receive equal treatment of any man, and if an altercation between a man and a woman was to occur, I believe that a man defending himself against a woman should also have the right to strike the woman in any way that a woman can strike a man, if she were defending herself.
What must be considered is the fragility of the person being hit. If an obviously weaker man, or woman, were to attack me, I should handle that person accordingly and not use an excessively damaging force on someone who is not a serious physical threat to myself.
If a woman of a smaller size and strength, (which is the case with many women) were to attack me, I should use only what is necessary to ward her off. Treated in the same way that a weaker man would be treated. But if a woman has a threatening amount of strength, (again like lots of women) I should be able to use as much violence is necessary to defend myself.

Our society is patriarchal, like pretty much every other human society in this stupid fucking world. In patriarchal societies men have dominion over women, all characteristics associated with the male sex are considered desirable, and all seemingly opposite or contrary characteristics are undesirable and associated with the female sex. Hitting a woman is unacceptable because of the nature of men and women as the people of our society have learned to understand them. Our society's world view is dualistic, so we learn to understand human beings' natures as what they aren't (our whole reality is defined according to what it isn't). We identify by elimination. Women are not men so they do not have dominion, and they're considerably stupider, completely harmless, and unnecessary other than to bear children. At least that's what we're taught, and what we infer from the patriarchal structure of our (prejudiced, piece of shit) society.

But a considerable amount of cognitive dissonance develops because as bearers of children, women form close bonds with men as mothers and wives. And also, as sisters, neighbors, friends, cousins, etc. because human pathos just is what it is. From this dissonance men learn that as annoying and unnecessary as they are, some women are valuable to them, and worth protecting. They're like retard siblings. Whatever's eating Gilbert Grape sure makes you want to smack him upside the head, but darn he's just so endearing and lovable. And retard's can't help the fact that they're retarded, so even though we understand why men are incited to violence, we expect them to exercise their superior abilities and practice a little tolerance. Getting a woman angry is like getting a retard angry, only they're not equipped with super-human retard strength, so there's no reason to feel worried or fearful. In fact it'd probably be a little endearing if it weren't so annoying. Practicing tolerance doesn't get rid of all that pent-up man rage, but you still can't hit a woman. Because being a retard, she gets all worked up and emotional and forgets that she will obviously lose the fight. Then you'll have to deal with her being mad at you AND her feelings being hurt.

To to sum it up...men don't hit women because women are kind of like retards, and as much as you'd like to hit retards when they annoy the shit out of you, it just isn't right. The taboo against hitting a woman in our society isn't an independently occurring phenomenon, its a form of special treatment, based on differences in sex. It's a symptom of our society's deeply ingrained, sexist attitudes, and perpetuates prejudice by validating the existing belief that how you interact with your fellow human beings should be based on your differences. To pursue equality is to pursue a model of behavior based on what we have in common, not on how we're different. Anarchism, either a little or a lot depending on school of thought, is based on this idea that yes, we're different and we want different things, but if we focus on the things we have in common, and focus our efforts on achieving the goals we have in common, we'll become more tolerant and understanding of each other so that concepts like government and legal/criminal justice will become irrelevant.

Pacifist or not, you have to admit that preserving special treatment based on sex will also preserve the underlying sexist attitudes that accompany it. Hitting a woman should be no different than hitting a man. People should restrain themselves from doing both, but that's not going to happen any time soon precisely because of that same pesky penis-worship that's responsible for inequality. If you want to persuade people to tolerate each others' differences because they're not such a big deal, you have to first convince them that they have a good deal in common. The sad thing is that strength is really psychological. I can say from personal experience, having had to unexpectedly fight for my life against full grown men a handful of times, that my usually atrophied muscles become surprisingly powerful with the right amount of rage induced adrenaline. I'm confident that this is due less to an exceptional nervous system than a possibly exceptional immunity to the messages most women receive: that they're weaker than men, duck and cover, scream for help, there's no point in even trying to fight back because you'll probably just make him angrier and might end up dead. Anyways, IT'S OKAY TO HIT A WOMAN. It's not okay to hit people, but sometimes that person's a women and to not hit her just because she doesn't have a dick is SEXIST.

Sure, but there's no "just kidding" clause in the charter. A person was banned for jokingly using the term "faggot"--that was justified, so was the banning of this person. if someone came on here and started telling racial jokes, they'd be banned as well as get the whole torch and pitchfork treatment. This isn't any different.

umm, using irony to illustrate a point is a lot different than telling racist jokes, have you actually read the post?

Yeah I'm with butcher, it seemed to me like he was just saying "this is what SOCIETY thinks" not saying HE actually thought that. He may have done it a bit clumsily, but I got his point, he wasn't ACTUALLY being sexist (or so it seems to me), he was critiquing society.

Yes, I read it. I'll agree to disagree with you, but in either case this person was a dipshit. Obviously I wasn't the only one to feel that way. If someone used irony to describe racism, typed with a fake southern accent and started spouting off racist shit...everyone would blow the fuck up over it. This isn't any different. To justify this you'd have to justify almost everything.

I'm not too worried about it, if others are offended, so be it. Still, if ppl use irony as a device to point out the inherently illogical nature of racism, sexism, etc (as I maintain the post in question attempted to do, obviously less effectively than intended) than its fine by me.

Anywayz, me and protspecd have acted like racist dicks in other threads, to little controversy...
