So, earlier this month, at the request of Spike, I made a YouTube channel so they could hear my tunes, no big deal. To upload all 17 videos, I had to hold my nose and give them my ID so I could unlock the "advanced feature" of uploading more than 10 videos in a day. Well, yesterday I get an email from YouTube, saying that my ID had been deleted from my account (although they also say that they may save it to "enforce [their] policies", very ominous), and a seperate email saying that my channel had lost access to these "advanced features", the implication being that I had broken their "Community Guidelines" and "Advertiser-Friendly Content Guidelines".

To be clear, I never signed up for their ad-revenue sharing service, unless there's some opt-out bullshit setting that I'm unaware of, so that part shouldn't even apply, and I clearly marked all the videos as "not for children", but even so I probably got flagged by an AI automod. Or maybe it was the part about "Content that's meant to praise, promote, or aid violent extremist or criminal organizations is not allowed on YouTube." By who's definition? This administration labels "Anti-fascism" as an extremist group. So anyways, if I just get fucking disappeared soon, you'll know why lol.

Fuck YouTube, Google, Gemini, and whatever else is owned by those corporate fucks. I'm gonna work on moving my stuff to a PeerTube instance, since I'm on other Fediverse stuff, just add it to the list lol. More on that later.

I 100% agree with this sentiment. Google (and Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Spotify and literally every big-tech company out there creating monopsonies and data-feudalism fucking bullshit destroying both the internet and real societies/economies as we know them) needs to back off. Not that they would, but then I guess we need to create alternatives before it's too late.

Seems like there are already alternatives in place , thx to the non-laziness of our familiya. APN. Though, teaching / sharing safe practices to those ignorant or just less fortunate {IMO online awareness/coding/ or just not looking upwards when you know cameras are everywhere)...can plant seeds of change.

Fuck 'em. Big tech/ Capitalist scum/ Data-feudalists fuck up everything they can get their grubby hands on. And there's fuck all transparency, such as in your case, so you're left to keep guessing.
Also rather suspicious that they want your ID number. Maybe that's "standard practice", I wouldn't know, but I'd also be reluctant to give out that info to the likes of Youtube.

There are a lot of alternatives to most of the services out there, that's true, but they're not always a 1 to 1 replacement, which make the majority of users to stay on the shittier alternative. And people tend to choose the platform where the majority of their friends are on and so on and so forth.

I've tried to get my friends to leave instagram for pixelfed*, for example, but so far I've only gotten two (2!) people to do it, the rest have sort of... just not responded. I guess taking a stand and leaving the comfort of convenience is mildly annoying and then they just scroll by.

I haven't checked out PeerTube yet, I'll do that later today.

    * = At least starting an account and testing it out simultaneously.

As I was typing out a response, I got my membership to makertube.net approved, so they're up now!

If anyone wants to check it out: Jimmy Halliday

It's the same stuff that's on YT, but going forward I'll post videos there instead. PeerTube's pretty cool, not much content yet, probably because there's not a good way to monetize so there's no incentive for big YT creators to move. I just hope that people like Spike can still see them, I'd hate to have my music gatekept by technology lol

If I had a Tesla battery and a server I could create Instastupid.org. ......but that would probably be tedious, if I actually did the work.

Only $6.88 for the first year, and $10.74 after that... That's less than I pay for my domain! Scavenge an old business PC and I bet you could make a Pixelfed instance, on the cheap!

Great that you found an alternative. And yes I can. After having to get a new computer (because even my email was losing more & more functionality) I can now access all those websites I wasn't able to before.
EDIT: It kinda sucks a bit that I was prompted to log in when trying to like one of your videos. I can understand why you'd need to log in to comment, but to "like" something? But at least they're not asking me for my ID number lol :p

Yeah, the account thing does suck, but from what I've heard from various fedi devs, accounts are necessary to combat the bots and trolls. Many instances require an email address that isn't from one of the "temp email" services, and some of them ask you pointed questions as to why you want to join their instance. For instance (no pun intended), when I joined the db0 Lemmy instance, one of the questions was "Who is your favorite anarchist? (you can't say Bakunin)"

What if Bakunin is your favorite anarchist though? Then I guess you'd be screwed :D

Just to be clear, they like Bakunin too, but just to make sure you read the whole question, you gotta pick someone else.

IDK if I'm the only one who's noticed this but in the last couple months various linked YouTube vids are not displaying in various posts & sites. The window for the video is there but instead of the vid being in the window there's a message saying Video Unavilable. The vids are still on YouTube. The browser, device, & internet provider do not seem to make a difference. It's the reason I haven't been posting in the "What are you listening to?" thread because there's a high likelyhood that the vids will not display & some vids other members posted are not displaying either. It seems that certain users & vids are extremely unlucky.

It's like the executives running YouTube have made such an insane amount of money that they're too busy living up their rich lifestyles to give a sh!t if YouTube keeps going or not. Or they think that YouTube has gotten so big that there is no way an altnerative will rise up to take it's place so there's no reason to invest any money back into it.

That's supposed to be an "anti-bot" measure. If you've logged in on that browser (or during that browsing session if you delete all cookies on close like me), those videos will pop up as normal. But yeah it sucks big donkey balls, the enshittification of YouTube has been wild to watch since they were bought out.

Miraculously, since about a week ago all those previously "unavailable" videos magically appeared again for me but I didn't change anything in my cookies settings. They're not set to delete after every session. I can still see every video now (don't wanna jinx myself though).

On my old PC on the other hand I did have the cookies set to delete after every session and that made no difference at all - I still couldn't see most of those embedded videos. But if deleting cookies works for you and other people, that's great.
