The Equalities and Human Rights Commission alleged that the BNP's constitution restricting membership to particular "ethnic groups" and those whose skin colour is "white" and the publication of these rules on the BNP website was unlawful under the Race Relations Act.

The Commission issued proceedings on 24 August 2009, against party leader Nick Griffin and two other officials in respect of its constitution and membership criteria.
The court set a date of Wednesday 2 September for a hearing for the Commission's application for an injunction against the BNP. The proceedings on 2 September 2009 were adjourned until 15 October 2009 as the BNP changed its solicitors shortly before the case. Justice Paul Collins rejected this stating that although the BNP had been in existence for 27 years, he saw "No evidence of a long queue of black people wanting to join the BNP".

The conclusion of the case on 15 October 2009 saw costs awarded against the BNP. Griffin had written to BNP members preparing to concede the case, stating that it will cost £80,000 to proceed or potentially £1m if the case goes to the House of Lords, they also were quoted as saying that "that to continue fighting the commission would bleed the party dry", "and would strip the party of the ability to fight the next general election". Griffin subsequently announced that he would ask BNP members to accept the court's decision and allow non-whites to join the party, claiming that this action "outflanked" the EHRC. The BNP anticipate that their members will accept the change on financial grounds.

This just just makes me sick. But what's saddening is they have seats
in gov and their racist views are being heard!

Fairly old hat, all this. Nick Griffin has been on Question Time and made himself look like a grade-A shitbag (most amusing was when he admitted hanging around with a high offical of the Ku Klux Klan - apparently this was okay because he was part of their 'non-violent' wing!) and while I admit they've had some political success, they are pretty much a fucking joke (such as when they hilariously unintentionally hired a black DJ for one of their shindigs)! They have been quite quiet in UK politics recently, attention being put more on the EDL, but they will no doubt rear their ugly heads when elections come back around.

But what's hilarious is that the more out spoken and crass they become on their
race points of view the more support they seem to gain. And shockling but not springingly
on their members list they have head police officals.

Yes thankfully the BNP do not actually have any Government seats, they don't have one single MP in the UK parliament, but they did get two MEPs (European Parliament) in 2009. The BNP were kicked out of Barking and Dagenham council in the 2010 election and the party is in turmoil, fucked up by in- fighting and divisions.

As caps rightly says the EDL are by-far the bigger concern for anti fascists in the UK right now and the EDL are fighting a good propaganda war by claiming they aren't racist they are just against Islamic extremism. Most people seem to have swallowed it but if that were true why do mosques and Asian communities get violently attacked every time they go on demonstrations? There’s always a few race traitors just as there are class one’s, the BNP for example have long had a black guy tagging along in their football thug ranks and it’s the same with the EDL, they might be able to produce the odd token non white face, but it doesn’t mask the reality that they are racist, fascist hate filled thugs who should be stood up to.

Centrist governments in Europe are proving nice little tools for Fascist organisations in recent months. Nicholas Sarkozy has been expelling Roma people from France and banning the burka, now I am sure some on here probably don't view the burka issue all that negativley, personally I think its dodgy for Sarkozy to be involving himself like that. Angela Merkel, in Germany recently stated 'multiculturalism isn't working', the man with no brains and personality of his own, Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron stated something along similar lines this weekend. His timing could not have been more ill considered as the fascist racist EDL were marching in Luton. It's a problem that's becoming more acute, centrist parties have been legitimising fascist, racist, far-right groups and political parties by appearing to take a tough stance on immigration. What was also very dodgy about Cameron’s rhetoric was underlying hints of ‘left’ ‘extremism’ being more the problem than the far-right. Whatever folks thoughts on the left in this forum, remember the centrist parties lump anarchists and far left in the same category, they are seriously out to fuck people over this time and turn a blind eye to the encroaching fascists while vilifying most Muslims- very dodgy times we live in, the lessons of history have not been remembered it seems.

Really pissed me off, reading this on the weekend. Besides being terrible timing, it's such a fucking stupid and antagonising thing to say. Does he think we'll not think him a prejudice arsehole just because he puts a Muslim woman in his cabinet (and she is a complete moron as well!)?

Well fucking said mate Baroness Warsi is a nasty fucking bit of work, dunno if you saw her when Nick 'Dick' Griffin was on BBC's question time? Her views on immigration are just as right wing as the BNP when it comes down to it.

oh yess, straw-angel- :a:'s "insight" - after years during which her christ democrats sabotaged and discriminated the halfhearted integration programs at every opportunity while running down the employment and education system - what a statement... fucking thatcheroid clone.
interesting that it came out of the discussion about thilo sarrazzins book "Germany Abolishes Itself" and the rise of geert wilders in the netherlands - both use very similiar tactics like "we really like jews - so we can't be racist..."
Sometimes I almost got the notion of watching a concerted action... time to abolish germoney I would say.

True words. When she tried to explain the 'big society' on that question time, it sounded so ridiculous! Horrible woman.

Yeah 'Big Society' is the biggest load of bollocks going. It might work in rich rural areas where christian do-gooders have too much time on their hands, but it's already been exposed by some who previously favored the principle, it can never work when grants for voluntary organisations and charites are being withdrawn. But anyway back to Warsi and other fascists.... let me get back on that

Is there anything to read about her "big society"-thingie - sounds like lying b. johnsons "great society" around the time of the tonkin "incident".
Took a look at her profile on con-servatives:
"She has always had a keen interest in racial justice issues" - hope for her it's enough to turn britain around...

Its not 'her thingie', she was just supporting it because that's the party line. On the debate her example of the big society was a bunch of people that lived near a run down car park that was filled with dumped crap. The government was harassed about it and told to improve the car park, as was the local council. Neither group did anything so the local people got up and cleared the car park. "People power!"

The real bollocks of this is that a political party can try and push this as policy or effective policy. Piss off! Its a basic admission that the people are now expected to sort shit out because the government will not being parts of their job. As JOE01 pointed out, expecting increased public participation when the above mentioned areas receive heavy cuts in support is contradictory to evidence.

As for Warsi, she obviously came out and defended Cameron's stupid, dangerous comments. I can't believe that the Prime Minister would make an effectively anti-Muslim speech on the day an effectively anti-Muslim movement was demonstrating. Also, as the PM, he has essentially made suspicion of Muslims politically and socially acceptable. And Warsi has had the cheek in the past to complain about how it has become socially acceptable to be Islamophobic in Britain. Don't support this sort of shit, then!

Far-right attacks escalate after BNP election defeats
Glass and rocks hurled at anti-racism meeting in east London

Far-right activists have attacked trade union meetings and anti-racist groups in the past month in what campaigners and politicians say is an escalating campaign of intimidation and violence.

In the latest incident, a 20-strong group hurled concrete pillars, glass and rocks at a meeting on multiculturalism organised by Labour councillors in Barking, east London.

"It was terrifying," said Beverley, 48, an NHS worker who was hit by a rock, leaving her hand so badly damaged that she needed surgery and was on a drip in hospital for three days. "These people seem to think they can bully and intimidate people into staying away."

The attack last Thursday followed incidents in Liverpool, Brighton and east London involving people who claim to be supporters of the English Defence League (EDL), a far-right street movement. A spokesman for the group said the EDL was unaware of any of the incidents, adding that it did not condone violence.

The attacks follow disastrous election performances by the British National party, leading analysts to warn that some of its supporters may be turning their backs on electoral politics to focus on more violent street confrontations.

"The threat is that as far-right activists decide the electoral path is no longer possible ... we will see more aggressive street-based groups linking up and a rise in racially and politically motivated violence," said Nick Lowles from Searchlight.

Anti-racist campaigners said the attack in Barking appeared to be well organised and targeted. The group "appeared out of nowhere" as people were gathering in the foyer and had lookouts stationed outside as the assault continued.

"All of a sudden about 20 men and one woman came running across the car park screaming E-E-EDL," said Beverley, who did not want to give her second name in case of reprisals. "We rushed to lock the glass door ... but they didn't break stride, they just ran at it and smashed into it. They were head-butting it, kicking it, throwing things at it."

The reinforced glass came away in chunks, which were hurled at the unionists and anti-racist campaigners trapped in the foyer. Beverley said: "They were crazed on the other side of this glass wall ... They started ripping pieces of glass off and frisbeeing them at us through the holes and then they started hurling rocks at us."

George Barratt, a Labour councillor for Barking's Mayesbrook ward, who was due to speak at the meeting on multiculturalism and racism, said: "It is extremely disturbing. We don't want these thugs here and we won't tolerate them attacking our meetings."

In the run-up to the local elections Hope not Hate campaigners, who were on their way to deliver anti BNP leaflets in Essex, were confronted by around 40 or 50 far-right activists who refused to let them off the train at Grays in east London.

This month a radical bookshop in Liverpool was targeted by around 15 men claiming to be EDL supporters and last month in Brighton a meeting on multiculturalism was attacked by a group of 30 or 40.

Weyman Bennett, from Unite Against Fascism, said: "These attacks are escalating in their frequency and in the level of violence. They are now targeting trade unionists and elected councillors as well as anti-racists - it is classic fascist tactics and cannot be ignored."

Reports like this one give me the impression that it's really okay to forget about things like good education, noble manners and respect even for the mentally poor from time to time, just to keep the streets clean and the unionists safe...
