That's actually a quote from the gospels of Mark [5], Luke [8] and Matthew [somewhere or other, I can't remember], present in the new testament of the Christian Bible.

It was said by the demon "Legion", who was at the time inhabiting an afflicted man that Jesus healed. The implication was that Jesus knew the man must be afflicted by demons, because he said that more than one life force inhabited him.

And no, I'm not a Christian, and I think Christianity is fucking shit, but I am very interested in theology and hence have quite a good handle on several religious texts.

 

off-topic, but funnily yesterday i talked about "legion" with another ex-catholic - isn't "legion" just an excuse for a multitude of demons to evade giving their "true names" to the exorcist - because called/ordered by these "true names" they would have to leave the possessed on the spot?
there are lots of jewish legends and stories about the name-riddles too, all about "true names" - and even the irish took the same aspect for their fairy stories...

Yes, that is a more accurate summation of the meaning here, I must admit I was never a very "good" Catholic even when I was a kid and I still believed in that stuff (mind you, I also believed in Santa and the tooth fairy and ironically I believed in them long after I stopped believing in god), so my understanding of biblical symbols has never been 10/10. On a related note, have you ever read the novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit by Jeannette Winterson? There's a fabulous allegory in it, included in the style of a classic fairy story that heavily alludes to the power of naming in theology and mythology.
