The Soria City Council proceeded today to remove the bust of General Juan Yagüe located in 'La Barriada', "fulfilling", said the mayor Carlos Martínez Mínguez, the Law of Historical Memory. The municipal workers planted a tree in the place where the offending statue had remained for almost 60 years.
Mínguez Martínez also related that the City Planning Department made a report with a list of all streets that are named with connotations of the Civil War, adding that all traces are being removed in compliance with the regulations.
The bust of the General has been stored in the municipal warehouse, in case the General's family wanted to claim it.
"La Barriada" is one of the working class neighborhoods of Soria, where the general had built a number of social housing blocks, as he did in his hometown San Leonardo de Yagüe. Following these actions, a bust was placed in his memory.
