i tried baking some up a few days ago and it tasted AWFUL, though the recipe came from the "soy not oi " cookbook which has always gave me great results. so i am assuming i did something incorrect.

I love most "fake meats". I have never tried Wheat Meat though, sounds interesting. I want to try taking tofu and cutting it up in strips and putting it in some shake and bake and bake it... be like chicken strips without having to kill a bird to make them.

Normally i think veggie substitutes taste just fine - don't know if i've tried wheat meat. I can't cook, so depends where i ate. Is it the vegan stuff, that doesn't have any milk or eggs in it, but which otherwise looks like Quorn?

Do you mean seitan. If soo the flavor depends on the cooking phase. What you put in with seitan will affect it's taste afterward.

yes it was also called- seitan. i think the problem i had was making the patties too large, though i only made them about 2 cm. also they were dark brown when i finished baking, so maybe they also baked too long.
i have heard wheat meat is really good....

They should not be dark brown when you are finished, and I don;t bake them but cook them...

Me and my mom made seitan last weekend. It turned out a little bit pourous but it was a valiant first attempt.

yes-mine were dark and i was thinking they were over cooked. so how do you all cook them then? pan fry them? and how thick do you make the patties?

Ummm my mom has the recipe so im gonna try and figure this out from memory but i believe vegetable broth, soy sauce, tomato paste, garlic and lemon zest. And when we created it we neede it into essentially what was a big blob of seitan which we then boiled and then cut up and froze.

i will try that tomorrow (on sundays i make milk and tofu for the week as well as trying to kick ut a couple stews for lunches). how do you use seitan? i was thinking it was like a finger food or possibly to make sandwiches.
and thanks thus far. really wish i had great people around me here in the real world to help, but i am extreme grateful the APN is here for now!

Its all purpose. Making seitan is just like buying meat. The possibilities are infinite. The best seitan foodstuff I've ever had was bufallo chicken wings. I'd definitely try that first. It's really easy and delichitable :)

Can somthing like seitan be made of something other than wheat? I'm allergic to gluten and am vegan so that's kinda limiting...

Seitan is basically 90% gluten, so you should be thinking about something else, I guess if you have some other type of flour from burly or something you could potentially make something similar...
