What do fellow Canadian folks (or anyone else that wants to chip in) think about Canada Day: 150 celebrations pathetic/ non-existent attempt to celebrate the Indigenous peoples culture and hardships (still continuing to this day)?

Canada 150 is a celebration of Indigenous genocide.

It sickens me. Humans can treat other humans this way. The government has not even tried to actively change what they did.. Nothing will ever be the same for this beautiful culture and peoples but the least the government can do is actively try to help them out. I mean come-on man! 16$ for a bag of 3 apples!! No running water and the limited amount of water there is, is disgusting and contaminated. wtf Canada.

    PS that's a solid meme.

What I like about it is the Indigenous peoples are now talking about a re-conquest of their land, no more fucking compromises.

I've always felt that segregation in the form of reservations (or at least the way it's currently set up) has heavily contributed to the "us vs. them" mentality. On the one hand any indigenous culture should have the right to live true to their beliefs and history but what do we do when we give them a bastardized version of freedom on their own land? Hear ya go buddy, here's some land, some free tobacco and alcohol, just stay over here and everything will be great for all of us. What a bunch of bull shit. Sure the government might have all these different types of funding for native Canadians but they've (systematically over the years) helped create a subculture of people who rarely make use of it. Plus it doesn't help that a lot of tribes turn their back on the individuals that leave the res. Personally I think it would be optimal if we could figure out a way to run and integrate reservations into the rest of society, and celebrate Native Canadian History more often but i'm not holding my breath. I think, just like anything else, education is the key. If we actually teach a more accurate version of history to children there might be a chance for positive societal change but that opens up a whole new world of problems when we start talking about modern education...

You brilliantly put what I had in my head into words. I totally agree with the comment about not holding your breath. The government will give scraps of support programs. With minimal left over government funding... If any. The programs that they are creating do not target their specific needs and difficult circumstances. But honestly. even if someone was to design the perfect funding/program the government would still have to get this demographic to actually trust the gov. fukn politicians have destroyed any shred of trust.

There can be no trust until the control is in the hands of the people and even then its still quite a leap... I'm glad I could help your point, hooray for first post successes !,,!
