    Black Bloc Jesus

    I have a question.

Does anyone know of previous times and places were moneychangers (or bankers) and their private property were attacked physically for political reason before the story in the bible?

Hers some info on Jesus and the money changers:

No offense, but I really thought that this was definitely an elaborate joke by an anarchopunk user. I expected some kind of funny meme picture or something. No offense to your faith. Maybe I need to read more of your posts. I have no problem with anarchist Christians, though. In fact, here in St Louis, there is a Catholic Worker house http://karenhousecw.org/ and I believe the Food Not Bombs here gets their food from them. That's what their old organizer told me.

Anyways, if anyone can follow this thread up with a respectful yet funny meme I would appreciate it. :lmao:

:) I don’t believe in a “god” but I have fallen for quite a number of “goddesses” in my life :D

But seriously, on a historical timeline I’m interesting in knowing if anyone here knows of other historical times and places before that “story” in the bible were people around the world attacked physically moneychangers (or bankers) and their private property for political reasons?

Christian Anarchism is quite a contridiction to me. How can one be an anti-authoritian with an authoritian god? Christian anarchists either dont read the history of anarchism or dont read about christianity. Anarchism has historically been anti-religious and atheist and has attacked religion.

I may be wrong, but as I teach/taught RE, I seriously hope not:

This was not really a political point Jesus was making but a religious one. People were conducting business in the temple and so desecrating his 'Father's house'. It wasn't their deeds as such that was the problem (after all, Jesus also dined with a tax collector) but where they did it.

Now, I'm not saying that Jesus had no issues with money. He was fairly opposed to gathering material wealth. He did say it was harder for a rich man to get into Heaven than a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. However, loads of philosophers and movements took issues with materialism and wealth accumulation. My fave is Diogenes the Cynic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diogenes_of_Sinope

Still, the story can certainly be used for commentary on today's issues:

I said b-4 & I will say it again, I do not think one needs to abandon their religion or spirituality to be an @narchist... To each their way.
But I have found that the more I study Anarchism the more Str8 up atheism makes total & complete sense.
But seriously who is this Jesus fellow you guys keep speaking of??? You mean the mythological dude who probably is not real & never was... Meaning the guy never existed.

I'm not 100% that there wasn't a historical Jesus. I mean, were the apostle's fictional? Their letters forgeries? Did John write the Book of Revelation or not? Or, if we accept that they were about, is it not likely they followed some bloke about?

However, Jesus was probably just an annoying Socrates-like figure (after all, Socrates was killed by the authorities too) who went around pissing off the other Jews and the Roman authorities. I mean, politically Jesus had some okay ideas but it was the God-related stuff that caused the problems. And Jesus definitely didn't go around performing conjuring tricks to amuse the crowds or come back from the dead. That's just a nonsense made up by his fanatical followers. Considering the similarities that have been raised between Dionysus (who crosses over with Bacchus) and Jesus, I wonder if it's this link that creates the Eucharist. I mean, his BLOOD is WINE. He must be the party god!

    Christianity is really fucking dumb.

Come on peeps, the question was: is there any evidence of others having done the money exchangers beat-down before Jeebus...not if anarchism is compatible with mass delusion

Actually, to get back on topic, it does point out that there was a precursor in the Old Testament.

    Nehemiah 13:7-8
And I came to Jerusalem and learned of the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
And it grieved me sore; therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

However, the link says that this is about abuse of a temple not an opposition to bankers. It was the abuse of the temple that was Jesus' main beef too. I can't find anything else physically causing shit for money-lenders. This is obviously just the most well-known account of earlier times.

Oh well, i think i might have to wait for the answer to this question. Hopefully David Graeber follows up on his book "Debt: The First 5000 Years" with "Resistance: The First 5000 Year" :)

And I must say, i do appreciate Jesus work, as the people below do too...
