Facebook ban for teenager who encouraged rioters

A 17-year-old who posted a Facebook message saying "come on rioters" has been banned from social networking sites for 12 months.

Appearing at Bury St Edmunds youth court, the teenager, from a nearby village, admitted sending menacing messages on Facebook.

Magistrate Graham Higgins also ordered him to complete 120 hours' community service, a 12-month youth rehabilitation order and observe a curfew between 7pm and 6am for three months.

The court heard that the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wrote the message at 9.45am on 9 August. It read: "I think we should start rioting, it's about time we stopped the authorities pushing us about and ruining this country.

"It's about time we stood up for ourselves for once. So come on rioters – get some. LOL."

Prosecutor Lucy Miller said the college student had 400 friends on Facebook, some of whom replied to the message calling him an idiot.

She said: "The police were alerted and when they arrived he had already deleted the post."

Defence solicitor Paul Booty called on the magistrates not to be influenced by hysteria surrounding the recent disorder.

He added: "There has been a strong kneejerk reaction and lots of misinformation, including apparent orders, which turned out not to be true, that all parties should be given custodial sentences.

"My concern, not necessarily for this case but for cases up and down the country, is that there will also be an awful lot of appeals."

He said his client, who has a previous conviction for actual bodily harm, had made a mistake and the comment had been a foolish prank.

The boy's mother told the court: "He is normally a good boy but, like all teenagers, he has his stupid moments."

Speaking to magistrates, the boy added: "I meant it as a joke which is why I wrote LOL at the end."

Higgins said that custody had been at the forefront of his mind but that the curfew order would act as "custody at home".

What's most disturbing is that facebook must employ people specifically to monitor everyone. Alterior motives are no secret...

This is pretty terrible, yet not surprising at all. The days when people can post whatever they want on the internet without repercussion are long gone.
Hell, just look at the number of left-leaning/Anarchist facebook groups and pages that have suddenly disappeared, including the page for this site.

    THIS MEANS MONEY FOR THEM

At least he tried to do something, instead of nothing like everyone else who probably agree that this country has a fucked up government but are too afraid to act.

Facebook is bullshit, obviously. When was he gonna figure that out?

I think I'll just start tagging. WIsh me luck.

It will not allow you to completely delete it. You might have to contact some Facebook admins directly and ask for it's full removal, but when I tried to delete my account it said it'll still be around, with all of my info, in case I change my mind and want it back, it just wont be public. When I left Myspace, I just clicked on cancel account, did all the shit, left a message, "Fuck Rupert Murdoc" And that was it. It was gone. But I guess you can't really completely remove anything from the internet, once it's been there, it'll stay. Idk how that works, but I've heard it.

haha, all the praising of the liberal - and even some conservative media about the role of social networks in the arab spring - now the cops are fishing for "teenagers having their stupid moments" - just to get as many villains for public condemnation/deterrence:
See, big brothers IS watching you... no, he isnt, and prosecutor Lucy Miller confirms it:
And I really hope the fucks turning the guy in to the cops may roast in hell!

I just posted on a Kelly Thomas group, basically calling all police murders to be one and the same, regardless of where they're from, and while posting the clash "white riot", I called for, like Greece and England, for Fullerton to riot. There was a lot more text, but that is the basics, to go beyond borders, and soon after I posted this, my facebook seems to be offline, as does the kelly thomas group. specifically it says; "Account Temporarily Unavailable
Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes" minutes after I sent it. I can't sign off, or anything, so I can't use my bands page to see if it's only me. Maybe coincidence? But really, I can't do anything on FB. So I'd figure I'd report here. For reference, if I don't post here on 8-18-11 Pacific time, than you know why. I doubt they'd arrest me, seeing as the riots aren't in England, but this almost apparent censorship is quite amusing. Might be a coincidence, but after reading this, I highly doubt it.

Shit, maybe it is just coincidence, but anywho, this is what I said.:
Though I absolutely agree that Kelly's murder was unjust, when it comes down to the impact left in the community, I cant help but feel that most people wouldn't care unless he was white. I'm not down talking Kelly in anyway, but I am adding onto most police murders, that happen to be, statistically of African American descent. Many people overlook other police murders throughout the country. A man was shot 9 times on the BART this month also. I'm not saying all should be platformist against each other, but we should incorporate all police murders together. This isn't JUST for Kelly, but for every innocent individual, killed, or affected by police brutality. An injustice to one, is an injustice to all. This happens too often, and those that are the most susceptible. No disrespect to Kelly, but this should also be for Oscar Grant, Alexander Grigoropoulos, ( in Greece) Mark Duggan, (England) and everyone else whose been a target of police violence world wide. The police are not on the side of the poor, but on the side of the upper class. What we need here in OC is a riot of our own.

    yes, shit's much worse.
    here's the story:
    viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7419&start=40#p51187

my understanding is, in the instance of the British riots, those doing the monitoring are employees of the state, not facebook (although no doubt the prevalence on banning groups means someone has that responsibility. But having said that I know of a few groups of facebook peeps that seek out and report en masse racist groups; some facebook functionary'd probably be paid to look at these reports and go: 'they look bad, delete.')

maybe it's a stupid question, but i'm no computer-spec at all and never took a closer look at face books:
how can an user-ip on face books get connected with a real-life-address?

i think annoncing a meeting point in full public and waiting right on time & exact spot for others to join and start some action (Jordan Blackshaw, 20 years old, and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22 years) isn't really smart these days, guess it's more than naive.
(and the 4 years sentence is only the more criminal because they were naive) - but how do they got this "teenager with a stupid moment"?

Unfortunately, yes. While that does not exist an alternative Facebook. Although it is possible to create. I remember two years ago, the Russian anarchists have created an alternative to the Russian social network is vkontakte.ru, but due to lack of funding and lack of popularity among the Russian-speaking population of this project to ended existence.
