    I believe that Religion must be abolished, it brainwashes children, kills people, segregates and discriminates the world will be a better place without it, thoughts?

    we have had this debate here already... And as someone who does believe in god, I agree organized religion is bad, but if you want to abolish people from believing in high powers, or gods, then I think there is a problem, as I think people should be free to make up their own minds.

    agreed, religion causes hate, war, and discriminates people, like the christians hate gays.
    if their was never religion there wouldnt be nazi's or any shit like that and the world would be way better.

    I don't like organized religion at all. I think it is great for people who find a real peace with religion, but I do agree with you that it causes discrimination, war, brainwashing, etc.
    But I agree with Anxiety69, that as long as someone makes up their own mind, it is wrong to rob them of their faith.

    Some of my best friends are religious (of varying faiths), and we still get along fine.

    I do believe that organised religion should be abolished, and a lot of religious people would agree too probably. But some people find comfort and security in believing that there is something there for them when they leave this shitty world. I find it illogical and silly, but who am I to rob them of that security?

    Granted, religion and religious institutions have historically fucked the world up, and if you look at the majority of conflicts around the world you will find religion has some part to play somewhere. That is the shit we need to get rid of, but simple faith and devotion to scripture, as long as they aren't hurting anyone, is fine by me.

    i disagree. religion should be abolished when it is used to oppress or steal money from the poor. i believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion except when you enforce it upon someone else. if you abolish religion then what more is it if you abolish something else you believe in that isn't "religious" and anyways if you try to eradicate a formulated thought, people can still with hold it in their minds. just like the so called war on terrorism us americunts are doing. if you genocide all the iraqi "insurgents" or "terrorists" the belief of this so called "terrorism" will still live in the minds of people who believe in it.

    Hmmm, i find this statement to be a bit hypocritical. we all enforce opinions on others, (by enforcing i mean telling an opinion, even when you may be aware someone else may be against it before u share it). using violence and such is certainly not how we should go about it. Think about the opinion of anarchy, if we didn't share this opinion, how would we get anywhere?

    I kinda dislike that statement as it has such a negative overtone, I mean telling an opinion hardly 'forces' your opinion on them, it hardly forces them to agree.
    Anyway I've said in other topics of this category:
    Fuck religion, keep faith.
    Religion: what someone else wants you to believe
    Faith: what YOU actually believe

    It's kind of a double contradiction, you can't stop people from following a religion, but at the same time organization of that kind will not go along with an anarchic system. Heres what I think.

    It needs to be.

    OUT OF SCHOOLS

    BANNED FROM BEING PUBLICLY STATED IN ANY WAY TO DESCRIBE TRUSTWORTHINESS OR MORALITY

    LIMITED SEVERELY

    MONITORED HEAVILY

    NOT ALLOWED TO TAKE INVOLVEMENT IN POLITICAL PROPOSITIONS( ex. The prop 8 fiasco we had in California, in which " YES" on 8 signs were placed everywhere any church was)

    Any other suggestions?

    Good list :)

    If we're allowed to really dream, I would also add (only slightly tongue-in-Stalinist-cheek):

    Remove religious practices from local and national Government procedures, activities etc.;

    Prohibit the public display of religious images, symbols etc;

    Prohibit the building of any more places of religious worship;

    Prohibit the conversion of any existing building into a place of religious worship;

    Remove charitable status from all religious organisations;

    Ensure that no exemptions were made for religious practice (including clothing) in the workplace;

    Prohibit any minor from becoming involved in a religious organisation (including attending religious services);

    Prohibit any minor from wearing any religious symbol (including clothing) in public;

    Compulsory science, logic and reason lessons from the first year of school.

    Basically, keep it between consenting adults, behind closed doors, out of site and in private, and I'll accept it.

    Hey, it's only what religious nutters have done to queers, atheists and other religions for centuries :D

    That is essentially abolishing it, since if you did abolish it, hence making it illegal to practice they would all do it behind closed doors anyway.

    The thing is, in a modern secular democracy (hah!) a 'liberal' campaigning group could make a reasonable case for many, if not all, of the things on my list to be enshrined in law, without actually abolishing the individual's right to believe in invisible pink unicorns or whatever other flavour of skypilot appeals to them. I'm all for working towards an atheist anarchist society, but I'm also a realist and I wouldn't mind a more secular society in the meantime.

    Also, with a bit more time and thought, I could probably re-word all of these things as positives rather than negatives. People generally like supporting positives :)

    Its a great idea if you want to bastardize the works of Marx and call it Stalinism.

    If we do some of these things were no better than Fascists. I wonder if you really understand what anarchy means. I think you let your anger get in the way of your judgment. Besides their are christians that consider themselves Anarchists; as much as a joke as you or I may see this they are better then the typical ones, and it shows at least some of them think.

    Religion and Anarchy are something that don't go hand in hand. Because in order to believe in an Anarchy, you need to drop some of the stuff religion has fed you. Libero has a point; some Christians are Anarchist...but only because they dropped the part of religion that tells them that they have to force their view on people. Honestly, now I can say I'm a Satanist. I enjoy self-indulgence; but I do not, in any way, force my views onto people. I know there's no life after death, because if there was, we would have a way of knowing. Religion is something used by people to make their life bearable. Who wants to live and die...and have nothing left? We all want to be immortal. (By our legacy, our literature, our beliefs) everything points to us never wanting to die. Anarchy can be used as something to make people's lives here more worthwhile. Capitalistic America sucks fat dick; only the rich can enjoy it. But in a world of "communes" we can be rid of money, social status, and begin to worry about survival and the advancement of the human race. I for one, would like to be on the moon one day, or see other planets never before seen. I love knowledge as much as the next person would. So why should religion stop us? Religion is just people telling themselves "everything is going to be alright." And I am no one to tell them otherwise. Give them their faith, we have a peaceful Anarchy. :beer:

    By the way, the more we try to bring someone else's beliefs (-isms), the more we start to treat it like religion. Terrorism, Stalinism, Marxism, Fascism. Anarchy and community is all we need. :rock:

    While I totally despise religion, the thread originator, and quite a few of the rest of you are seriously missing the point. Abolishing religion would entail using force to uphold a mandate (As in MANDATory.) on people. This is authoritarian and anti-Anarchist. Anarchism IS traditionally opposed to religion because religion is authoritarian and harmful, etc., but also because anarchism is philosophically materialist. It would be pointless and self-defeating to attempt to abolish religion. As much as I despise it, I don't want to abolish it, I want religious people to think logically about the ridiculous ideas they believe and realize that it's just primitive, pre-medieval nonsense. We should be trying to open people's minds so they can free themselves from the shackles of bronze-age dogma.
