I wasn't quite sure where to post this, but since almost all the dumpster divers I know either dive for food that is still edible, or for items that can still be used, (Even if they are in slight need of repair) I thought maybe this was the right place to post.

Over the weekend, I was watching the news and they had a story about a young woman from New York City named Anna Sacks. (Manhattan area, I think. It least that what it looks like on the video they showed)

Her handle on Instagram is #thetrashwalker, and she goes about the city emptying trash bags from store that don't lock up their dumpsters. The focus on this story was CVS Pharmacy, but, on her Instagram page, it seems that she is not limited to CVS, or any store(s) in general.

If you dumpster dive, no matter what your purpose or reason, then I don't have to tell you about the treasures one can find.

In this particular news story, this woman had found hundreds of dollars worth of food, vitamins, and various sundries all being thrown out by CVS that were still in their wrappers/packages, and could still be put to good use.

A friend of hers even found a GUITAR in a dumpster that was in PERFECT CONDITION. (All one needed to do was PUT ON NEW STRINGS!)

I think it might be a violation of the policies of this site to tell you to follow this person, as that might come across as an endorsement of sorts, but one might be surprised at one will find on her Instagram page.

I mean SERIOUSLY? A PERFECTLY GOOD GUITAR THROWN IN THE TRASH BECAUSE SOMEBODY WAS TOO LAZY TO REPLACE THE STRINGS?

IS THIS WHAT THE HUMAN RACE HAS BEEN REDUCED TO?

    Food for thought!

Seemingly good items that have been thrown in the dumpster are there for all kinds of reasons. A common ploy for some employees was to grab items or merchandise and throw it in the dumpster with the regular trash, only for them to come back after hours and retrieve them. It was a sneaky way to steal things without having actual evidence on you.

The place I work at is at one of those warehouse/office districts where the buildings are divided up into suites. A few times when I am out throwing trash I find all kinds of things that are in good condition. Some things are just thrown out by maintenance after a tenant moves out. Other things are thrown out because they weren't able to sell and I guess the people just found it easier to dump it. This past summer one of the dumpsters was overfilled with roofing shingles still packaged.

My biggest haul was finding boxes and boxes of T-shirts that were wet after one of the floods. I guess the T-shirt printing company didn't want to deal with it and figured it was easier to throw them away. Some had print designs on them but there were also some blanks. I just got a few dozen in my size and washed them a couple of times.

Those t-shirts are part of the point I was trying to make.
If you washed them, to make sure you got rid of all the old and mildew, you could do all kinds of wonderful things with them, like, for example, silk screen your favorite designs or band logos or political slogans on them. (Or if you're lazy like I am, get out a permanent marker and do the same)
