I am curious though to people's opinions on the above subjects, This is not to stir up bad feelings or make anyone feel bad, but more or less what your thoughts are if suicide is a viable means of escape, or not. And euthanasia, should we allow those who are suffering to end their lives?

I think about these two topics a lot (not considering them, just observing the ethics behind them) and I find both of them to be a paradoxical act of both extreme selfishness and extreme selflessness. Selfless in the way that you are giving up your entire being and selfish in that you are damaging all those who loved you. It makes my brain hurt to think about :p

Suicide: I fucking hate it, but yes it's a viable means of escape. Example: you're a 15-yo girl, raped daily by your step-dad, he makes you pregnant while your real mom is dying of cancer. I can imagine you slitting your wrists at one point, yes.

Euthanasia: I see this different from suicide as it is a regulated process here in Holland, involving doctors and their assessments and assistance. Euthanasia is only performed when there is actually no hope for recovery and things are only going to go down-hill, involving more pain at the very least. Euthanasia then is a painless alternative to long-term suffering. Also what of people in coma's, what if we pull the plug on them? Isn't that a form of euthanasia in a way?

suicide: A lot of people should consider it, it would make life better. I.E. eccoterrorists.

euthanasia: I dont konw about you, but if i have to live through a feeding tube, id pull the plug myself. I think those who are suffering should (at their request or will) be allowed to die. Would you want to suffer for years rather than move on?

And about damaging the ones who love me? Sure itd hurt to see me go, but they would understand that i dont wanna live like a fucking vegetable on a bed in a hospital for years you know? And if they cant get over that fact, they didnt love me in the first place (not like many people do actually)

    Haha.

I think suicide needs to be taken on a case-by-case basis; it is not fair to say every suicide case is the easy way out - sometimes it is the only way out... I'll use the same example that Rathryn used. However, I think it is often selfish and stupid. "A permanent solution to a temporary problem," if you will. I think people get too focused on their hurting and then kill themselves before trying to genuinely fix it.

Euthanasia - honestly, I think it is fucking stupid that it is illegal almost everywhere. Who the fuck should tell a terminal patient, suffering and miserable, that they have to wait to die? I think doctors should be able to humanely euthanize people by injection or a guaranteed overdose (like assisted suicide in Oregon). I think it would hurt your loved ones more to see you suffering and dying slowly in front of them.
I'm a vet tech and as sad as euthanizing pets makes me, sometimes it feels really great to put them out of their misery (that sounded sadistic, but I swear it's not). Because if they weren't painlessly euthanized, generally in the arms of their owners, they would probably crawl under the bed and spend hours dying painfully.

I honestly think suicide is something man has always been fascinated by, the ultimate question is there something on the other side. Either way these people feel that they cannot live there lives the way they are currently. If you look at all the stupid new fads, all this emo-cutter bullshit, its almost like suicide and self loathing has become something cool or normal among my peers . i think this clearly reflects where society is going, in the shitter. The world we live in now couldn't be more controlled by material possessions.

One step back would actually take you to the goths, then new-wave (I think) and so on and so forth. There's always been a group like that if you ask me...

I agree with that to an extent. Yes there have always been fads, but never such a fascination with suicide, with such a heavy integration into are culture. You shouldn't also forget that when you type punk on google images or photo-bucket, you more often then not see these pieces of shits, with the tag: punkrockerboy, or some lame shit like that.

    pssh. Fad bastardizes...

yes to both, if one so chooses. although i do think suicide is amazingly selfish, if someone doesn't want to live, why should they have to?

Suicide can be extremely selfish if you have people that care about you, but if your life is a living hell then you have every right to die on your own terms, and I've never understood why so many people consider it the ultimate form of cowardice.

As for euthanasia, I fully support it. I know I wouldn't to be kept alive by machines in a hospital bed with no hope of recovery. I think it's warped how prolonging suffering has become the acceptable norm in a lot of cases.

is it not also selfish to expect some one to live a life they hate just because you love them?

it depends, did that person exhaust all means trying to rectify the life they hate, or did they simply give up when the going got tough?

Good point.. but I think whether a person can take on a tough situation is totally subjective. Some people can take on a problem where others would fail because they just don't have the will power behind them. What may seem like an overcomeble problem for you might seem utterly impossible for someone else. It is a hard one to judge I say, you can never know what was going on inside their mind at the time.

I don't really understand how someone who commits suicide can be called selfish. Yes, the suicide will hurt the people still close to them, but that's not what the suicidal person is thinking. There thinking the other people will be much better off without them. They will not longer be burdened by having to deal with a depressed, suicidal person and free to live their lives without such worry.

That's why you can't look at a suicidal person and their acts from an outside point of view. You have to really understand what their thinking and what their rationale is for killng themselves.

I think euthanasia should be legalized - since it isnt in the US- and I also think it is the very opposite of selfish. WHereas suicide hurts the people that love you, when death is inevitable, sparing the one that love you the pain of watching you suffer is quite courageous.

Suicide: I dont think its necesarily cowardly BUT i know that people can come back from extreme cases of abuse to do exceptional things. The mindset and suffering that people experience at a point in life can cloud judgement and in many cases, even Rathryn's example the problem is transitory. It comes down to peoples personal strength of mind and ability to heal themselves.
