We all know a few folks who buy into this shit whole sale. I've always wondered why seemingly intelligent individuals can be so prone to believing in outlandish explanations for world events.
I've noticed that conspiracy theories have found an unfortunate popularity in the activist/punk/anarchist community. It's a waste of revolutionary energy.
Anyway, I found an interesting little article with some thoughts on why, exactly, certain people are so prone to believing that Elvis is still alive and lizards run the world. What are your thoughts? Any cool articles, stories, etc? How do you react to people in the punk community who espouse conspiratorial world views? At the present moment, I'm working on polishing up my own understanding of major issues so that I can figure out exactly how to intelligently counter some of these ideas. I feel that we all have a responsibility as anarchists to challenge such nonsense. It only helps the powers that be if we are muddled by fantastical misconceptions, you know?

It makes me fucking batty, many times people have no idea of the origins of these "theories" and you are absolutely fucking right, a complete waste of revolutionary energy and thought.

Right? So frustrating :@ Lots of good hearted, intelligent, likeable, young punks and anarchists who went off the rails and landed on Alex Jones somehow. I always hope that it's just a stage, but I know middle aged people who are still wrapped up in it. I guess all we can do is remain level headed and try to correct misinformation.

So what type of "Conspiracies" are we talking about here. Where do you draw the line. I agree Alex Jones is a quakck but not every thing he says is BS he is just a fear mongering sensationalist.
Plenty of people out there claimed the Lead being found in Flint Michigan's water for the last 3 years poisoning children and making the dumb was a conspiracy, or that the world is flat and we have never been to the moon, roswell or aliens, many claim the Rothschild's being rich and controlling tons of influential shit is a conspiracy. Fuck tons of people believe GMOs in our food is a fucking conspiracy, tell people there are carcinogenic properties in their meat and soda and they says. "That's just some left wing conspiracy". Or how about Christians claiming evolution is a conspiracy. The use of DDT/agent orange in the US before it was deemed harmful, a favorite ppl who claim trails of chemical can not be dispurced from airplanes. These are also people who don't believe agent orange was ever used as that would debunk their NO such thing as chemtrails theory as that's a chemical being dispersed into the atmosphere.
Chemtrails is obviously a big one I see people in the community disagreeing on left and right. Chemtrail is a compound word like contrail. For anyone to claim and airplane cannot be used to alter the weather is absolutely insane. Its basic science. Elements can be suspended in the mostuire of clouds just like they can be down here in fog rain water snow. Sure lots of people claims these "Chemtrail" are to try and control population and make people sick purposely. This I disagree with. The titanium and barium are being used reflect the suns rays back down toward earth when the would normally bounce off the earth and travel back through our atmosphere. Maybe in an attempt to better crops warm up areas.
There's a well documented Nam mission that was one of the earliest military works documenting weather manipulation. They needed to cut off a supply rt. And the rain season was holding off so they attempted to get these clouds to rain, in which they were successful. It remains one of the few big victories for The US in Nam.

Any asshat can read a wikipage that says the scientific community doesn't recognize chemtrails. The scientific community also refuted the earth being round for centuries and that cigeretts posed no health risks and that Dioxin was healthy and that lead was healthy. So the scientific community doesn't always know what the fuck they are talking about either.

I'd like to hear some of the "conspiracy theory's" your talking about so I can research them. I do t really see where conspiracy theory's fit into anarcho discussions, as in trying to provide direct action and protest. There are much bigger things anarchos can be worried about and need to stand to make a change against that are far more detrimental than chemtrail or illuminati BS. Like banks and monetary greed. Coprate greed and laws governing over life. Its fun to look into but not waste peoples times at local GR meetings.

The problem is that conspiracy theories tend to simplify things too far: to create a black and white world out of one made of shades of grey. In doing so, they prevent discussions about real, complex issues that have to be dealt with by creating an enemy "other". There are enough problems to fight without making shit up.

My contention exactly! There are so many solid, concrete battles to fight. We have no need for these lofty "what if" theories based on fluff and wild extrapolation.

And what, exactly, are some examples? Damn. I can name quite a few off the top of my head.
Lizard people created the human race and rule the world
The Illuminati is arranging death camps within its borders and secret police will soon cart us all off to them (we already live in a prison state, no need for exaggeration, here)
We already have the cure for cancer but big pharma won't release it
    The Moon landing never happened
    Sandy Hook Massacre never happened
Vaccines cause autism, cancer, will cause your dick to shrink until it inverts all the way up to your skull and whateverthefuck.

You get it. You've heard a great deal of this, I imagine.

    Yeah, stuff like that. Also:

Obama is secretly a Muslim (http://www.conservapedia.com/Obama's_Religion)
The earth is secretly flat (http://www.tfes.org/)
    The vitamin C conspiracy (http://whale.to/a/vit_c_cons.html)
The Beatles (as they were presented to us) never existed (http://thebeatlesneverexisted.com/)
Humans are just the result of prehistoric alien gene splicing (http://www.history.ca/ancient-aliens/)

Some of them are pretty silly if you ask me. This website sums it up pretty well: http://whale.to/.

I think part of the problem is nobody knows what to believe. Half the stuff we got taught in school was outright BS, and by the time you start figuring that out there's a question of how much to hold on to and how much to dump in the trash. Add in all the times governments and corporations have been caught acting like full blown Bond villains, and it becomes less and less of a stretch to believe these things.

Ultimately it comes town to that old adage: Question Everything.

    I believe in conspiracy theories.

The term itself has a negative connotation and has been corrupted over the years to somehow include alien cover-ups, etc. That makes me... annoyed. I believe in conspiracy theories that are about events that are somehow convenient to those at the top. i.e.: 9/11, downplaying global warming, the illusion of Muslim terrorism, planned obsolescence, religion and a couple more. These are fuel for the revolutionary spirit, or at least mine.

A conspiracy theory is but another term, probably coined by the media, to add a negative connotation to those who believe the government is lieing.

So, stupid shit put aside, conspiracy theories are a large factor to why a fair amount of us are here today.

    Consider it

Hell, half the stuff that was "Crazy Tin-Foil Hat Wearing Hobo Talk" when I was growing up is public knowledge now:

Cops/NSA listening in on everyone's telephone conversations? Do you mean the stingray thing or the NSA thing?
Secret government facilities where people are imprisoned and tortured without due process or even being charged with a crime? We talking about Chicago or Guantanamo Bay?
CIA doing mind control experiments with LSD? Well, they've actually released documents showing that was, in fact, going on when all the 'crazy conspiracy whackjobs' were claiming it was.
The NSA actively trying to undermine online security in order to spy on everyone? Not just an awesome Robert Redford movie anymore.
Wealthy bankers colluding to fuck the economy? Been there, done that, funded the bailout.

We know the people in power engage in criminal conspiracies, so saying 'oh, that's just a conspiracy theory' doesn't do much to dismiss a claim. At the same time, you shouldn't believe every bad thing you hear just because it's about a person or organization you don't like. When you try to convince people of things they don't want to hear and have already been conditioned to dismiss as 'crazy', you have to be especially careful to make sure every piece of info you share is 100% accurate and verifiable--because it's going to be hard enough to convince people as it is. If someone can stand up and provide proof that something you've said isn't true, what little shred of credibility you had goes out the window. Now you're just a conspiracy nut who's making stuff up. Doesn't matter how true the rest of what you have to say is.

The worst part is, when you get caught spreading BS, it doesn't just discredit you--it's discredits everyone that shares your views and opinions. That's why it's so important for anarchists to be careful about the information we spread.

Fist of all not everyone who believes in current conspiracies cartoonishly believes in all of them. The flat earth is disproven, but would it really be that difficult in a corrupted system to fake pictures of the earth since they come from one place, NASA. Of course it sounds ridiculous the idea of the government faking the shape of the earth, without any context it sounds as ridiculous to the average American trying to fathom a society without government.

Conspiracies have existed throughout history (the assassination of lincon, the assassination of Kennedy) and it's understandable when the average person wishes to stay ignorant about all the terrible visual training in their deceptive media, but to people who know the government is corrupt, they should see it throught before marginalizing an entire group. Of course not everything is true, but some of it is well documented and sadly real.

For your own sake keep you mind completely open and don't left any modern politically correct prejudice cloud your perception. If something sounds stupid to you, read into it before automatically deciding it's stupid alt-right strawman ramblings.

People in Neo-nazi/facist circles bounce ideas around comparing and criticising modern leftists/communist and Anarchist ideologies and theories, they understand them better than those groups could understand them. Everyone is oblivious that they're a defensive group, not some kind of vampires that grow stronger from minority blood. They're against religion because it's obvious slave programming, but still understand spiritual esoteric aspects of the global rulers without jumping at the inclusion of demonology being too christian.

Anarchism by design is too good at helping non-anarchist-communism. Facists understand where the controlled opposition is coming and how the "evil ambiguous corporations" control the mind, True systems of control that go beyond someone not being politically correct enough or there no being any stupid people of color in an punk band.

The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves. - Vladimir Lenin

I know I'll get kooked in to oblivion for my comment so here it goes.

I find it odd that some christian dipshits try to lump pedophilia behavior and somehow justify the actions of those like as if it's part of the queer community. (If you lived in the bible belt you'd hear some of the dumbest shit)

I have a lot of friends in SF and the Bay area who do outreach work in the Castro and China Basin. Some of those kids and adults come from similar backgrounds but end up getting strung out or turning tricks.

I know I have bought in to some theories some stupid and otherwise nonesensical, I do believe the powers that be are out to get us in subtle ways. Don't believe it? look at how they've treated indigenous peoples throughout history from poisoning to straight up acid attacks at a public pool for black and white people who swim together. Do I believe they owe a living FUCK YEAH THEY DO!!!!!! Unless you're in the upper echelon of 1% and are white you're scum to them.

That's the point. It's capitalism, there is no need to bog down on specifics of the conspiracy, a person will lose their mind with paranoia. Capitalism, Patriarchy, and White Supremacy are the conspiracies, everything else are merely symptoms and consequences.

What if I told you that the term "conspiracy theory" was deliberately injected into the mainstream narrative by the CIA to keep American citizens from questioning the official narrative of the JFK assassination?

Myself suffering from amalgam illness for almost 20 years is a fact to me due to the amalgam fillings I had and removed them incautiously. After a scientific approved test which assured me as well I don't have to doubt my judgement. But I would never say that everyone is affected by it since I met many people with the fillings who are the most sane people in the world. But it is considered to be a conspiracy. At the same time global warming is a fact to me for I feel its effects on my own skin. I have trained myself to be my own authority when it comes to deciding the "truth".
