If you use waxed dental floss in place of thread, you can use a lighter to melt the tips of the floss together instead of making a knot like you would usually. It's pretty cool and easy. Has to be waxed though. That's actually how I learned to sew the first time. I think it's a traveler trick. I don't ride freight (yet) but my friend who taught me used to.

That'd be pretty funny if DIY went mainstream. I don't know how I'd feel about it. I guess it'd be cool if DIY actually caught on as a principle in people's lives. But I can't really see it transcending superficial fashion in the mainstream.

How did ya'll with studded jackets get them? I really only wear denim. I mean I have my grandfather's old cycling jacket but I'm not going to punk it out and I only really wear it when cycling. But yeah, I assume they're expensive. Did you save up for a while to buy them or five finger them? Where do you get the studs from? I guess I've never really thought of making one but talking about it on this thread makes me want to make one for cycling.

Get an awl.[IMG] Makes the studding process easier.
You can find them in lost and found bins at art schools (free!!!) or at craft shops.
I'm not sure where you can get studs without relying on the Internet. Studsandspikes.com, eBay, etsy.com, and crustpunks.com are reliable sites.
I've been lucky by mooching off of friends that have an excess of studs. Try asking your pals for leftover studs.
As for the jacket itself: thrift stores!

yeah, i thrifted mine ages ago, it was really ugly and very thin so studding and sewing it was no problem. i bet you its so old its started to rot, which is pretty disgusting.
    cheapest studs are on ebay.

I bought my bike jacket in 1985 for R70 (about $8,75) off a friend and there was this leather shop that also sold studs. I think I paid about R10,- for 100 studs (the smallish conical variety). I also made some 1-inch long ones myself on a metal-lathe. When I went oversees I bought abot 10 more, a more expensive variety (1DM each) and also scrounged a couple from friends. We also used to remove that metal bit from the old bic lighters and clamp those side-by-side along the jacket's collar. Sadly though, after returning to south africa, I kept my jacket in my cupboard, and one day after the garbage removal guys had collected our garbage, I noticed that my jacket was missing and I asked my mom if she'd seen it and she told me she fucking threw it away!!! I still haven't quite forgiven her for that yet and somehow I doubt I ever will 100% (not that I hate her for it but I hate what she did).
I saw someone mention stealing studded belts and putting those studs in your jacket!

I'm 18, and aside from a patched up hoodie (patches from all the Crack Rock Steady bands along with a few local bands) and band shirts I dont dress "punk" at all. I actually don't really care too much for the whole dressing the part thing. Punk isn't a fashion statement, it's a way of life and mindset.

my dad who's 48 and an old skinhead punk mostly wears his work clothes and his bondage is stuffed in the back of his wardrobe, its awesome bandage and is older than me (21) he has lots of patches on them from local bands and punk bands and they still smell like crap which is wicked i think. he still wears his dr martins and he has a anarchy no master no gods T-shirts but apart from that hes completely abandoned the punk look because he aint got time to DIY clothes which is a pity. im not really into the punk clothes but i do wear a lot of black clothes.

a lot of people grow out of the punk style but still have the same ideals, I always say punk is a state of mind, you can dress like it or not, that's just your choice :)

And I agree. I will still wear my patched pants with zippers on them and the three vest that are also patched. I have a jean jacket too that has a shit load of patches on it. :D I love sewing. It's a good way to clear my mind. Sometime I just don't feel like being stared at so I'll dress a little more normal.

I think you should wear something that hugs your little ass and sucks your balls like they do in the future. The future of rock n roll lies in its sucking potential. Wear a members only jacket around your left knee and a Penguins Hockey Jersey with CDs as patches stitched with tape...from a crust tape...like Morgoth or something or Exciter Pants. P.S. I am 37 years old and I dress like shit. People think im a tweeker. They should make a movie about it cuz id watch it. Ever see Dirty Work. I like the part where he goes Maleee malleee maka makalee lakaaa and everybody sucking sand. Don't Mess UP!!!

I've gone through this same experience. Im 36, and have 3 boys and people look at me, all the time, like he's too old for that. I don't care if others don't think I should dress "punk", I do it anyways. Because I like the statement it makes, Im not like "normal" societyl, I don't want to be like society. I reject their beliefs and moral supremecy, and I want them to know it. I totally enjoy the different styles within the "punk" style. Im not going to let anyone make me feel ashamed of these feelings. Fuck it, if you love it, do it for yourself. Your opinion of yourself is the only one that matters anyhow. fuck societies ageism, labels, and general dilluted opinions.

Who the fuck are you telling someone to "grow up" for wearing what they wanna wear, judging a person by the clothes they wear? The punk police? Calling people you don't even know posers.. And by the way, this isn't a fucking dating site either if you catch my drift.

I'm 17, and I've had that feeling of "why?" I'm gonna die someday, and all of this will be a dream, nothing matters, or at least I feel some days. "Why do I have friends, or even care about school, and fuck these jackets piling up in my room!" (I have 3 that I wear and another 2 that I plan on selling, need the $.) But then I think to myself, "this shit makes me happy, I live once, that's all I've got." So wear what what you want, and fallow what you believe in. If I wanna make a jacket, I'm gonna create a piece of fucking art, I'm not gonna cut corners, I enjoy what I can create from my blood, sweat, and sometimes tears, although, that was usually the case when I was younger, and when I had fuck up 4 patches in a row, good times. Anyway... I'll wear what I want, if I want to be clean cut and look like lawyer or James Bond, fine, what ever makes me happy. The way you dress isn't who you are, it describes a bit of your personality, or at least that's what it is to me.
Rock on, and enjoy life. \m/

i also feel the same way about my DIY type of fashion.
why do it? why do i feel the need to belong in a certain group?
well, humans just have that need, atleast most of them do, and its ok.
its ok to want to look a certain way so your kind can identify you in this urban jungle modern world full of retartds and robots.
its also ok to NOT want that and just be ok with wearing jeans and a t shirt and looking the way you look not giving a fuck.
both of them are FINE, and i just swich between those and a whole lot of other kinds of clothing, im just basicly all over the place when it comes to fashion, but usually just go neglected because it makes me feel more natural and basic, it also filters out a certain kind of people from your life that i realy dont want in my life.

these thing gets tricky when to feel "in" you need to buy a product or a clothing line that transefrs your hard earned money into someone elses pocket.
paches? cheap and basic, money goes to some broke ass punk band anyways.
vest? i bought mine at the local market for 12 bucks or something.

megadeth and metallica shirts are something else, these people should not be getting your cash.
same for pantera and judas priest.
same for straightning your hair and raiding hot topic.
same for american eagle junkies or whatever big clothing companies are in now.
i think you got my point if you didnt say so and ill try to explain. sorry for the english mistakes.

I dress in a typical "crust" style, but I think of myself more as an individual since I pretty much make it all myself.
