It's a big gamble I know, but by fuck I'm going for it! I just moved to Waterford on the south coast of Ireland. No punks except me (and one other person who likes it but he's from Dublin), so it's in at the deep end. Anyone had experience with similar situations?

    Anyway here's the poster:

If you've got any friends or contacts in the area, please pass it on!

In the early 90's I moved to Shreveport Louisiana, there was fuck all to do there, there were a handful of punks and a bunch of skater kids that were actively being recruited by white supremacists. I snuck my way in to the local college radio station and began playing punk over the air, little by little I ended up taking over the management of the radio station and got the college to begin funding shows, we had some great bands come through including Nation Of Ulysses, The Cows, Hammerhead, aMiniature, and Drive Like Jehu, by the time I left 3 years later there was a full blown punk scene happening in that little corner of the deep south...a little stubbornness and a lot of hard work paid off and a majority of those little skater kids became punks instead of Nazi Skinheads...good on ya!

man, good-fucking-LUCK with your endeavors. i have a similar situation in my town, though there are only a handful of punks and a completely dead scene. there was this place called the arts factory that the scene was based around, but it got foreclosed on or something along those lines. and then eventually the scene quit breathing and died out. not i have to go all the way to New York from NJ just to see a decent show. they call themselves political punx, but i dunno.

anyway, i've been thinking about trying to get the scene up and breathing again for a while now, starting with my yet-to-exist band and a few other local acts with nowhere to perform. ever heard of the tompkins square park riot show? i've been thinking about doing something like that (minus the political edge) every summer or so. just gotta get the permits...

BY THE BY GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING. I HOPE YOUR SCENE PULLS THROUGH!!!!!!

don't forget to update. \m/ :ecouteurs:

OK, update: overall, the gig went well! Not as big a turnout as I had hoped but it's early days yet. I've been told that someone there was discussing starting up their own punk band, which is amazing!! All the bands were really nice, to the point of refusing to accept travel money. Checkpoint made it despite being held up by a flat tyre!

If anyone's in a punkless town, do this shit. It's so worth it!! Having said that, I didn't break even money-wise, but someone has to barge in first don't they? :)

Another update! Things are going fucking amazingly well!! Dole City Punx has become something of a Waterford institution (in a good way). It's turning into a collective, people are going to the gigs repeatedly, and I've met a lot of really cool people through doing this!! Ah I love DIY. Next gig involves two US bands, Rail Yard Ghosts (folk punk/flailgrass) and Peasants (DIY folk). It's going to be epic. Again! I've got pages on Facebook and Tumblr, check them out! http://dolecitypunx.tumblr.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dole-Cit ... 99?fref=ts :)
