I hope I'm writing this in the right section. Vegetarianism is kind of counter-culture... oh well.

So, I ate some clams. Why is this significant? Well, I'm vegetarian. To set the record straight, I do not eat the flesh of any animals. I wish to be vegan, and will do so as soon as I start college, (Next year) but for now, my parents will not let me cut milk and eggs out of my diet.

Anyway, the other day, it was my grandmother's birthday. She lives alone, and my folks had her over so she could spend some time with the family. My dad cooked some pasta and clam sauce dish, and didn't tell me. (Therefore, I could not prepare my own meal.) When I saw this, I reminded my dad I was vegetarian, and clams were animals. However, my whole family then pressured me into eating the dinner with them, so I did, with some guilt building in my heart.

So here's my question: Did I make a big mistake? I know from my zoology class that clams don't even come close to the level of being that chickens or cows or pigs do. They are bivalves, and hence have no brain, or even a structure resembling a brain. However, they are animals nevertheless. In the future, what should I do the next time it is suggested I eat clams?

I'm not a vegetarian (although I don't eat a lot of meat) but I really don't see a problem with you eating clams one time or even if you were to eat a bloody hamburger (excuse the pun) once in a blue moon, I think you can still live with a clear conscience that you're not impacting significantly on the slaughter of animals. Really, I don't get this "fundamentalism", as if eating a single meat fibre will taint you for life. You've got to look at it rationally and logically. Maybe I'm missing the point.
Anyway, as far as clams being animals, where would you draw the line? Would you kill a mosquito or a tick? I'm not trying to be funny, it's a serious question.

As far as mosquito and ticks go, I'm a little strange. When I was a little kid, I cried when the other kids stepped on bugs. So to this day, I never intentionally harm arthropods, even though I now know how simple even arthropods are. Well, shit. I guess I just answered my own question. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

As far as vegetarian fundamentalism goes, of course eating a piece of an animal doesn't permanently taint your life. But if you do end up eating an animal, (at least in my short experience) you don't feel so thrilled about it. It's not really a rational thing I suppose.

Anyway, thanks.

I can tell you that you won't die from eating meat once in a while. You should know that by not eating meat you won't probably save a single animal. Real action does save lives. I, myself, eat fish from time to time and i don't call myself hardcore vegetarian because I believe in direct action rather than boycotting type of food. What you want to do is try spread the idea of vegetarianism to others so it becomes more popular in your community. And yes, clams are brainless animals without developed CNS.

Spike, as for your question, I'd say people need to show more respect to nature and Earth itself. When tiger gets bitten by mosquito it instinctively attacks back and kills it if possible. Why shouldn't we ? The whole point of vegetarianism is to show more respect ( by not eating meat in this case ) to nature. Why shouldn't we act according to our instincts and kill mosquito when it's trying to hurt us ? Many might say because we can think and act the way we want to. True, but where would we be if tried to avoid every ant and mosquito ? I, myself, feel sorry for them and try not to kill them as much as I can.

Haha, I'll actually save an insect from drowning if I see it struggling in the water and I wouldn't willfully kill a bug/beetle either, in fact I find insects extremely fascinating but I fucking "hate" mosquitos and until fairly recently I used to go befuck if I heard one whining around my ears like a little dentist's drill at night and I'd just have to kill it. Nowadays I try to ignore it cos they apparently only bite you once and I actually find it quite pleasurable scratching the itch, as long as it's not on my feet or knuckles. What I really detest though are fleas! I can't kill enough of those fuckers! Luckily we don't have bullet ants in our area but if I could be an insect I wouldn't mind being a badass bullet ant. Bottom line is we must respect nature and all its creatures and plants (except for fleas, lice & "crabs").

Do you have venomous spiders up in Denmark? I don't really mind spiders... or cats :D

EDIT: nope, just did a web search, doesn't look like you have anything to worry about.
But check out this amazing thing I found:

Do you mean cos he's wiping out an ant colony to get the cast? Well, I've also got mixed feelings about it but as long as he's not making them to sell and it's purely for learning purposes and for exhibit in a museum I think it's okay. I mean it's not the same as animal experimentation or killing for sport and it's a very quick death. I'm not sure if we should even put a human spin on it. But it would be interesting to hear some more opinions on this.

You can't be serious. Just because it's for 'learning purposes' makes it ok ? I guess you support vivisection as well ? What about millions of rats, rabbits or frogs killed every single day on medicine collage just to show students how it looks from the inside ? This is pointless and stupid. There are other ways to see how it looks, but this is the easiest and less expensive. And haven't we agreed that we, as humans, need to show more respect to nature ? And then you claim it's very quick death so it makes it alright. A bullet to head is very quick death as well.

It's not the same as vivisection and he's not making millions of casts every day. He puts them in a museum and millions of people can see it on youtube and get an appreciation for one of nature's wonders. As I said, I have some mixed feelings cos on the one hand yes he is wiping out an ant colony and it's not something I'd encourage but on the other hand if he's doing it responsibly by only making one or two of each type and not hundreds of them for profit I think one can still speak of respecting nature.

I am sure there are other methods of showing people how it looks inside. Drawing would be enough for me :) and they must know how it looks in there...Pouring hot metal on thousands of ants is just...horrible I think.

yes it is but there is no way of making an acurate model of an ant colony without destroing the colony and the ants
