Black Flag Co-Founder Sues Ex-Bandmates Over Use of Punk Group's Logo, Name

Was Black Flag an Anarchist Punk Band??

Ha i had a conversation about this here band a couple of days ago while i was talking to someone about American Beat Writers and one writer from San Pedro California, around 13 miles away from Hermosa Beach, Charles Bukowski. I did like Black Flags writings, or what i heard, but i never found them to be anarchists, they were like Charles Bukowski's scribbles, supper raw and realists.

But hey i could be wrong, if anyone has links to them discussing there political views as anarchists please post the links... Thanks

 

There were a lot of punk bands that came out of that scene in SOCAL...Like BAD RELIGION and SOCIAL DISTORTION, I remember buying some records of them but i never got the vibe they were anarchist, i'm being sincere, i grew up in SOCAL, and fuck i had to look to the UK for bands like CRASS or CHUMBAWAMBA...

Do you have any links to interviews where they discuss their views on politics or anarchism??? Especially where they discuss anarchism??

I always thought they were like a DIY band, or some sort of petite bourgeoisie band, were they owned the small means of production and distribution, you know like Ian MacKaye and Dischord Records...they were and there are a lot of bands like that...but that docent make them anarchists...

Maybe Greg Ginn went to UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) as an Anarchist to figure out all the new stuff they were thinking & teaching in their economics department so he could use it against them??

I wonder if Greg Ginn applied to go to, or looked into going to, the Chicago School of Economics, thats were the real new thinking in economics was brewing under Milton Friedman and his crazy new ideas of Neo-Liberalism.

They were definitely anti-establishment/anti-cop, but I wouldn't say explicitly Anarchist.

 

Black Flag is still one of my favorite bands and sadness me to see them doing this over money, or whatever is up on their minds.

Can you add links to this thread on Black Flags anti-capitalist, anti-state and anti-hierarcy comments they have made in their songs? in interviews they have made ever since they were formed in 1976? or better yet explain their anarchist model on running a music label? I am curious to see their anarchist ideas in action in running a record label, i bet it was all horizontal, leaderless, with direct democracy and a sharing of the profits...

I think they were an artsy punk band who's only link to anarchism was the band name...Black Flag

Otherwise if we can talk about Black Flag, why cant we also talk about all those other bands that came out of that scene who were much the same, like Bad Religion??

Black Flag came out of L.A. (Los Angeles/Hollywood) and as they say, it's all about the logo in L.A.

If they choose Black Flag because it's a symbol of anarchism it'd be a different story I think. But then again, where does support for an ideology end and actively defining an identity begin?

 

I'd think it would also be apparent in their lyrics. I'm not familiar with their lyrics as I've never been a big fan of Black Flag D: but surely if a band had anarchist ideals, these would be reflected in at least some of their lyrics?

 

Would you consider Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys anarchist bands?These bands just like BF were/are socially arranged bands that talked/singed about their inner struggle, their own problems, rejection, depression, who is friend or foe etc...Contravene is anarcho band , but they never said:Fuck the government or fuck the state.They would rather say:Fuck the evolution and that is why i love these bands
