Liking a band means agreeing with their beliefs?

Well, in my opinion, I like a few songs from some bands that have beliefs that are different from mine. The songs themselves don't contain "hateful messages". I enjoy the songs. Would I financially support these bands? No. I financially support bands and movements that I personally support from my point of view. However, if a band with different views has a few songs I like, I will listen to them. Whatever music moves you will move you, but the message behind ONE song in particular might move you more. If you are into said message, you are into that movement. Lyrics are a part of the music. If you are into a song that is bashing people based on race (even though those categories do not actually exist and it is purely a social construct), then you do, in fact, support racism (social construct).

    Hello everyone,

I was hoping I could get some help with a new doubt that I have, I already know what's the consensus here regarding fascist bands however now I wonder, what about homophobia? Should I avoid bands that have homophobic members on them? What if I can't tell for sure if they're homophobic or not? Should I stop listening to metal altogether? I ask because it is way easier to find out which bands are NS yet that's not the case with homophobia. Also, what if one or more members of a band are homophobic yet their music isn't? Should I still avoid them anyway? These same questions apply also to animal cruelty.

    Thanks for your answers.

Most importantly: don't support any band that goes against your beliefs or convictions. But (and this is just my opinion) whether you should or shouldn't listen to them just for the music (they may sing in a foreign language), I guess that would be a personal decision to make. I wouldn't condemn you for listening to them. I have maybe 2 or 3 downloaded albums in my collection which happen to contain a homophobic song. I wouldn't sing along them and I rarely listen to them anyway but they won't turn me into a homophobe either. Can't say knowing that they're homophobic doesn't put me off and makes me feel a little guilty either though.

I see, but what if the band as a whole doesn't go against my beliefs or convictions? What if only some of the members are homophobic or cruel to animals and don't express their views on their music? What can I do if I have no way of knowing if a metal band I like is homophobic/cruel to animals or not? And what should I do about Ozzy? He did bite the head of a dove once...

Also, Kerry King of Slayer used homophobic slur once to describe a drummer's technique, does that make him homophobic?

If there's no way of finding out? Well, you could either not listen to a band, just in case :p or carry on listening to them until you know for sure I guess, and then the rest is up to you. But I wouldn't buy the album if I wasn't sure.

Why are you asking us? My moral standards and your moral standards are two different things.

Actually, I'm gonna take that back immediately, there's nothing wrong with getting the views of others on this or asking for guidance. But please, listen to other people's views on this, but be your own person, it's up to YOU to choose what your guidelines are, not any of us. It's only religious nutters that need someone else to tell them what to do and believe...

I have albums with tracks on them that go against my political beliefs, but you cam learn a lot from listening to others. Finding out the reasons (no matter how pathetic) for others' hatred can make it easier to tackle head on, there are also things that we may consider wrong that come up as a result of them having very different upbringings/cultures.

Let me give you an example way outside of anarcho-punk. I have very very wide ranging musical tastes. I was playing early gangsta rap in punk and metal clubs way back in the early 90s. When Ice-T formed Bodycount it was amazing, a black gansgta rapper pushing the boundaries and forming a heavy metal band. I loved it. The first album had a lot of politics in common with anarchists and a lot that wasn't. One of the most striking tracks on their first album was called "Momma's Gotta Die Tonight". The lyrics are about a black man realising that his momma, who he loves and who's cared for him is a racist. He realises this when he brings a white girl home and she disapproves. The song makes the point that racism is racism whether it's white on black, black on white, black on asian or whatever, and that racists deserve to die. Anti-racism, both ways, is a key feature on the album. Nothing wrong there. However, the album is hugely sexist and treats women as sex objects. Probably especially on the track KKK Bitch which is about him falling in love (lust) with the daughter of a Klan Leader. So where do we go on an album like this? There's lyrics I agree with, lyrics I don't agree with. Some very valid points made, some serious misogyny. Personally, I still listen to the album. I've even met Ice-T, I hosted an after show party when Bodycount played my home town.

Inside punk there's similar stories, one of my favourite punk bands from the late 80s were The Crucifucks, especially the Wisconsin album. Again they make some valid points, there's politics on the LP I agree with, but they also quite seriously glorify violence in ways that are way beyond what I agree with. Again, still love the album.

Let's look at ultimate sell out metal, Ozzy Osbourne had to be the biggest sellout in the metal genre of all time. There's very little politics in his music, but occasionally the odd nugget pops up. In 1986, he released an album called "The Ultimate Sin", which contained a track called "Thank God For The Bomb". Cold war era, it was, of course the atom bomb he was talking about. I was young at the time, a big metal fan, but also a bit of an activist, CND being one of many organiisations I was a member of. Clearly this is a song that politically I strongly disagree with. The reasons given in the song for support of the bomb is that because both sides have it it keeps the peace and actually prevents war. I don't personally agree, but that doesn't mean I can't respect the argument.

I think we all have to find our own standards of what we listen to. Personally, I don't, and wouldn't listen to Nazi bands. I wouldn't listen to bands who are seriously homophobic, but having said that, a small amount of homophobia on an album probably wouldn't put me off the album in the same way that blatant racism would. That's just my personal choice though - you may be different.

Coming from the guy who think it's okay to listen to a band whose singer has nazi tattoos, uses racist/antisemitic/homophobic insults, is known to tour with bonehead bands and take pictures with known neo-nazis, well, huh, you don't really have any credibility here.

Hey Beast, no-one's telling you what you can or cannot listen to but if you're gonna support fascist/nazi/racist bands by buying their shit you might as well share their ideology cos you'd be supporting their cause.

Wow, I noticed just now that cunt Varg got arrested again, my friends told me something about it, but I never saw it anywhere. I must confess, I like some of his earlier songs, but there is no way I am going to support him in any way, like buying his stuff or so...he is clearly fucked up in his head :D

listening is one thing and liking it is something else.
i wont call you a nazi for studying ww2 history.
just like i wont call you a nazi for listening to NSBM or some shit, but you buy their cd's to support them and generally spread their music and be an active part of the scene then thats something else.
