I went looking through those links, many of which are dead, for 10+ minutes and I still have no idea why you want us to boycott Suicide Girls. Not that I am or have ever been a member, I'm just curious as to why you think the site is bad enough that it should be boycotted.

Well, yeah, but so is any other job. Some people make money with their hands, others make it with their junk. I'm all for not spending money where possible, I just don't get what's so egregious about softcore porn that it warrants a boycott.

Yes I'm pretty much on the same boat as you. I even googled it. And to believe I thought Google had all the answers :(

these models get a lot of money for foto sets, so i dont think its exploitation.
so i don't understand either why should it be boycotted?
i have some ideas, maybe because people make a lot of money on selling the subculture. if you count people who pay to see new photos and doesn't it seem strange when millions of people dream of these models..

Wow... did you guys actually read the page i linked to ? there's hundreds of articles explaining how they rip off the girl, with letters from suicide girls models who explain how they got sued, scammed, exploited, etc...

It's only a big money making machine. They're in for the MONEY, nothing else.

Objectification is objectification regardless if it is dressed up in 'alternative' clothing (or lack thereof) or not.

Yes, these girls "choose" to be a part of this, and yes they get paid. But we have to look at how we define "choice". Why is the choice for a woman to objectify herself for the profit of men? I would say the only reason that "choice" is there is because we live in a patriarchal society, if we had true gender equality then that choice would not be there for her to make.

I dated a girl for awhile, who was on that site, and is now on godsgirls and deviant nation, worst mistake I ever made.
Pretty hot, but worst attitude in life, super suspicious, non supportive and complained about everything.
Oh yea, worst sex Ive ever had too.

As somebody who has worked as a Sex Worker I find this view to be backward as all hell. If it is done by choice then I have no issue with it.

I like posing one question to thos who view Sex Workers in a bad light...do you like porn?

haha, they are trying to get people to boycott suicide girls while they have a banner on their homepage in support of free speech.

The only reason i would boycott suicide girls (not like i ever been there for more than 30 seconds in my lifetime) is because of all the dumb assholes who actually pay the 48 dollars or however much the subscriptions are. Plus, topic is not important (personally of course). The models for that site arent forced to model for that website, there are plenty of other ones out there like it.

I could have sworn the creator(s?) of the site is (are?) female, and its not as if the choice isn't there for men either, granted its not exactly a common thing however its still there.

Well first of all I consider Suicide Girls more art than porn (but I see a lot of things differently than others). Some of the girls are nice people that listen to the same music as us, that have the same beliefs as us. All of the girls do it by choice, and the site is ran by women, and some girls do it because they feel it empowers them.

Okay I think what this post is about though, and I do agree with is. One of their girls, Apnea I believe her name was, claimed that Suicide Girls ripped her off, and sold her photos to other websites, and did some other things that she didn't agree with. But over time it has become a business, and as most businesses has become corrupt, that's capitalism for you.

Do I disagree with some of what SG does? Well yes. But is what they do worthy of a boycott? From what I know, I don't think so, there are more girls with positive stories from their time with Suicide Girls than their are girls with negative, so what do you do? It's just like any other job if you don't like your employer for whatever reason, or disagree with your employer then move on to a different employer.

The suicide girls website does not directly exploit the models. It enables the general public to.

I don't think its a question of whether or not someone 'likes' porn, and being a sex worker/pornstar/etc is without a doubt exploitative. All waged labour/work undertaking without owning the means of production is exploitative.
I think what should be noted is that blanket statements such as meansofexistence wrote infer that earning a living through the objectification of one's body is somehow worse than other forms of work. And this is problematic as it ignores the possibility that people working within the sex industry may actually prefer sex work than another form of exploitation.

If you wanna argue that working within the sex industry is in of itself a liberating/revoultionary undertaking then thats a completely different story, and if so, maybe one we can discuss next time i see ya :beers:

Maybe I'm a bit ignorant, but from what I've seen, all too often it's not a 100% free choice. And from what I've gathered from former sex workers (or from people who work with them), they're often ripped off too, and have to cope with a lot of abusive stuff. And it's one of the things I got against the suicide girls, and that I've had for a while now, the group really doesn't have ethical business practices.

However, that's not the first thing that I hated about them, which is simply that it's one of the most redundant, cheap and easy you-can-barely-call-it-art thing I've ever seen. I've studied photography and one of the first things we're told is that subject doesn't matter so much because a good photographer could make an uninteresting subject interesting by his mastering lighting, composition, and so on. I mean, look at...I dunno...five SG pics and you've probably seen them all. And since they're a bunch of pretty girls, what you need for a photo shoot is not talent so much as expensive equipment. Artistically speaking, SG is probably one of the most mediocre thing around. And as for the models themselves, I don't know about other places, but in Montreal, most of the somewhat pretty girls have done "modeling"...and they call it "alternative modeling"...if so many people do it, it hardly is alternative now is it?
