There's no way that I could personally listen to songs written by douchebags who promote racism, homophobia or sexism... just like if I found out a friend held those kinds of views; they would no longer be my friend.

Normally I wouldn't do this but since Grizzly gave me permission I shall post a reply from him/her on my inbox in hopes that it might help someone else:

I used to be a big Agnostic Front fan until I found out what Public Assistance said. Cause for alarm was one of my favorite albums too :/, I sorta lost my fondness for NYHC after that. I still listen to Sick of it All occasionally, but it's not the same.

By the way that quote I made is 100% authentic, just thought I should make that clear :lmao:

Having been around in the heyday of NYHC I gotta tell you peeps I never bought into it, the whole macho jock mentality tied to skinhead culture was just really un-punk to me immediately, Agnostic Front putting out flyers of a ginormous AF skinhead beating the shit of an effeminate looking punk wearing an MDC shirt was just horseshit...true then, true now

Wow that's really fucked, love to find one of those flyers and call Agnostic Front on their shit.

And also I was young and naive back when I liked NYHC, plus it was some of the only shows coming near my area so it was just what I had before my tastes in music improved.

I tried to read this whole thread before posting my own opinion, but I gave up. Too many posts... :D Anyway, I think that it's possible to appreciate different aspects of music. For example, you may like some song's riffs, eventhough you don't agree with the message, that the song's lyrics promote. You may like art, even if you don't like the artist. But of course you should consider if you want to support such bands who represent something you are trying to fight against.

thats exactly the argument of some squatting punks I knew some years before:
skrewdrivers "WP" is a good pogo song, forget just forget about the lyrics.
too bad that most other people - amongst them some of colour - forgot about the pogo when they heard the lyrics - and most of them left the place.
    and believe it or not:
the boneheads smashing this east london squad some time later loved both lyrics and the pogo song.

fazit: you can't be that picky some times...

I'm not sure if I understood you correctly, but yeah, sometimes the lyrics can be so horrible, that you just can't forgive them.

confirmed - guess I'm toomuch in touch with those darn RASH & SHARP types, they never use more than the initials when they refer to the damned thing and sadly we still have to deal too often with it, thanks to it's sinister qualities.

I think it's a difficult one. True Nazi bands? No, not interested, at all. But there are many on the edge.

Skrewdriver? Bunch of cunts, but they weren't always. There were TWO incarnations of Skrewdriver, the original lineup were not a Nazi band, and their first album, on respectable indie label Chiswick, had no right wing politics at all. It was after the band split that Donaldson reformed it with an entirely new lineup and started the racist white power shit. Would I listen to anything by the new Skrewdriver? No. Do I still like the first album, yes, it was a good album despite what the cunt Donaldson did later.

Another is Admit You're Shit, I have their first EP, "Expect No Mercy". It was released on Mortarhate, the label run by Conflict, and AYS' early gigs were all played on the London Squatter/anarcho punk scene. There are no racist lyrics at all on Expect No Mercy or and other AYS recording. Lead singer John Cato was mates with Colin Jerwood (Conflict) and for the period AYS were active was hanging roung the London squat/Anarchy/Animal Lib scene. No-one who knew him at the time were aware of his other political beliefs. Much later, Cato was active in Combat 18, probably the UKs most violent ever Nazi group, founded as a "security force" for the BNP, they soon split as they were even more extreme than the BNP. Cato was also in the British Movement (another Nazi party) BEFORE he was in AYS. The Expect No Mercy EP even contains a Minor Threat cover (In My Eyes). So we have someone who in the late 70s was a member of the British Movement, in 1985 was hanging around with Conflict releasing Anarcho punk on their label and by 1994 was exposed on the front cover of Searchlight (a British anti-Nazi paper and organisation) as a Neo-Nazi. Maybe his politics did change for a period then change back. But where does that leave us with AYS music? I like the EP, I still listen to it, the rest of the band are not Nazis and never have been. Conflict even re-released the EP on Mortarhate as recently as 2005.

This YouTube has the whole EP, including the Monor Threat cover.

is catos bouncing career documented somewhere? it would make some useful example for an article about how hate biz is going/bouncing during the times.
from time to time people around here write something like this to distribute it at gigs and protests/blockades.
we got lots of hatemail because of this educational experiment, but also a handful of successes in less ossified brains of the kameraden only waiting for that veeery last drop to bail out of the right skinhead scene.
    Is searchlight still active?

This is the best I've found anywhere:

The rest of that site is worth a look as well. You may find it useful for this sort of stuff.

    Yes, and bigger than ever.
