Millionaire punks

While I have no doubt most of the people on that list are rich the numbers seem more than a bit inflated...

First of all I wouldn't sign up with a label whose sole interest is making money. Also I'd hate to think that our music had become so popular as to generate loads of money. But if for some reason it did (and not through rip-off record prices), I'd like to think we'd use the bulk of it for benefit causes (or maybe burn it, haha).

 

if that was a band that grew with so much popularity within the anarchist movement and the mainstream firstly if i was in a band we would make it clear, that we won't sell out, and another thing never play at big commercialized bullshitty festivals, never sign into a mainstream label like EMI

Stay as punk as fuck with DIY and never sell out! \m/

 

What I'm curious to know is how does everyone feel about Ian Mackaye? I mean he has kept Dischord records DIY and has done alot for the Punk scene, hosting all ages shows, providing houseing for musicians, I'm not saying that makes him a saint and excuses him from scrutiny. I don't know, how do you guys feel about this?

Is he an anarchist? As far as i know he's not, but then i might be wrong since i stopped listening to whatever he's doing a long ass time ago...

He was straight edge and might still be, and he made some money out of it...

If your in a band that's vocal about its beliefs i dont see the problem with earning as in this system you need money behind you if you want to spread your message as wide as possible. you dont necessarily have to sellout to do this either seen as though theres much bigger bands in this article who have had most of there money drained into some dodgy label when ian mckaye is loaded off his own d.i.y label.
I think maybe we have different ideas of pop punk, but i always thought of it as a sub genre based on its 'poppy' melody's which has been a style since the beginning of punk, not just some falloutboy simple plan thing. Theres been plenty of politicized pop punk bands, listen to j church. and i think it is definatly a gateway into punk culture and politics. whereas i always thought the idea of anarcho punk (other than the political side) was to be anti-punk i.e playing whatever you want and not falling into the stagnated scene of everyone rehashing the 77 sound or playing mindless oi music so the idea of anarcho punk having its own set musical sound ruins the point of it.

 

punk can still have a cute sugar candy tone or soft as fuck and still not be classifed as mainstream pop punk there is a "hardcore" anarchist pop punk band with the name of assassinators which is DIY as far as i know of who was part of the scene of the youth house in denmark

25 million just seems a bit too much, from all the interviews and stuff I saw from him I would never ever estimate his wealth to be close to that. Sure it might be his image not to show his wealth but also when he talks about not selling the label and stuff you get the impression that he is not banking as much as he could. Dischord records is far from mainstream and though I have no idea how big they might be in the US their bands have zero popularity where I live.

For instance guys form Slayer are all listed in the 10-15 million range and I'm sure they make far more money than Ian Mackaye... As well as sell far more records and play much much larger tours.

And those sources are far from reliable. They don't list Michael Gira of Swans and I'm sure Young god records and Swans reunion tours are bringing him at least 3 to 4 times as much money as Ian Mackaye pulls in a year...

 

I really dont understand why after all this time we still have to argue and and explain why its wrong for those people to have that much money , i could go on and on about this but this would be an incredible waste of time , the only thing that i'll say is that with all the money that these people been hoarding , they could have easily paid the bail of a lots of our comrade who are locked up in cells for what these hypocrite been preaching and made their money off. This is not a game...
