Bands are completely personified through their music and finding out how they get to a certain audible destination is interesting as hell. I always love to see/hear what other bands are playing out of. What equipment they are using and how they get their tone.

As you become an older punk you kind of dork out on this shit :p

    My rig is as follows:
    GUITAR:
Epiphone Explorer bass - set to the bridge pickup all knobs at 8 - 10.
'84 Gibson Explorer is in the mail!

    PEDALS:
    Boss Tuner
Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive - Volume knob at 10, Drive and Tone a bit more trebly and Gain at the halfway point.
Boss RV-5 Digital-Reverb - The reissue one set to Modulate with all knobs at 7 or 8.
Fulltone Bassdrive (recording only) - I ditched the boss for a more bassey tone on the recording of Burden of Beast.

    AMP AND CAB:
    Ampeg SVT Classic (All tube. I believe it's a '93) - I play with the Ultra-High and Ultra-Low buttons pushed in. Other settings are Gain=7, Bass=6, Mid=8, Frequency=3, Treb=7, Master=3.
Ampeg SVT 8X10 - The fridge. It's one of the American made ones, so it's probably from the 80's. I tore off the tolex and stained / varnished it.

    SOUND:
Running a high gain and low master volume on the amp supplemented with the Boss Overdrive creates a pretty heavy, slightly punchy crunch. The treble drive on the pedal plus high treble on the amp creates a pretty huge difference between strings. Volume-wise my high strings are louder, but the lower strings get a huge rumble going. It's good for having melodic notes stand out more when I need to break through the 2 guitars. They have a Sunn Model-T and Marshall JMP, so it gets pretty loud. I almost always play clean with the reverb pedal on. It creates a very faint hallway style echo. Nice for creepy interludes. -Blaine

    What do you play on?

my rig is pretty shitty :S I like playing a veriety of styles but lately I'm really into stoner rock and molodic "crust" starting a stoner rock band with a friend of mine :p

right now my only good piece of equipment is my guitar I love it to death and would never trade it in for anything :p my guitar is a gibson les paul standard ('59 re-issue) faded honeyburst with zebra pickups which goes directly into my line 6 spider 3 amp --,' the amp is SHIT but it's something I'm trying to save up for a new amp but it's going slow :S just trying to figure out what amp to get since I need a broad tone so I am torn between the bugera 333-212 XL infinium and the line 6 dt25 112 combo leaning a little toward the line 6 because it has a wider veriety of tones ranging all the way between sparkly clean and tight high gain :p

so that's basically it for me

    P.S. I love your band :p

    :ecouteurs:

    nutz!

    Aww. Thanks dude!

If you can stand to wait a little longer to save up more, going for the all tube amp is pretty damn worth it. It will give you a way greater crush for metal and crust. You may want to check out Laney, MusicMan or Sovtek. They are good amps and you can usually find them for pretty cheap on CraigsList: $450 - $500 range. Sean used to play on a B-52 100W all tube head. It was pretty fucking noisy, but good for raw crust type stuff.

For drums I'm super picky about the cymbals, it's one of the few things I'll sink money into. 24" ride and some smaller rides for crashes, cruising craigslist for some budget model cymbals that kids have neglected so they have tarnish without crack and keyholing or floor model clearance sales around the holidays. A decent wood snare (maybe a piccolo), and a bass pedal that won't crumple when being mashed on. I use a drum dial to tune the tubs, 1 or 2 mounted toms (one tuned higher than usual) a floor tom, and a large bass drum. I prefer a large beater and some sort of aquarian head (II or III). The top snare head can be coated and double or triple ply since I like to mess with brushes too. Most of my shell packs have came from friends moving away sales or craigslist.

For stringed things anything with a proper set up and working electronics will do really. Strat or les paul style depends on how my weight is holding. Even if it's an off brand the older the wood the better it'll sound. I've had some really special guitars but food, bills, and drugs have always gotten in the way. Bass is a little trickier p-bass, tele, or t-40 is best. Roll the volume to 10 & the tone to 0, run through an old zoom pedal from japan if you want fuzz or effects. An old oddball stick that's a copy of something else could be a great find. Hondo II, Aria pro, old old harmony, research it on the internet. Subway guitars in Cali has warehouses of old wood and could make you something special for the cost of a just made china guitar from guitar center.

For amps, 80's peavey preferably solid state 12" speakers for guitar & 15"s or 18" for bass. If it still works it's a treasure. Some old tube heads are cool, but they tend to gain out before voluming out. If you got money maybe a JC-120, kustom tuck and rolls, or a musicman. Know how to turn knobs.

Most new gear doesn't sound as good cause wood doesn't grow like it used to and they keep the same styles while sending the factories to poorer and poorer countries.

But seriously, has anyone tried cutting the speaker cone? Guitarists used to do that back in the day to give it that distorted sound before distortion was really a thing.

You can coax a decent dirty distortion/overdrive sound out of anything, even with cheap ass pedals and amps. No need to blow money on big name brand shit.

Until you play out regularly then the shit breaks down constantly and the crowds get tired of you sounding like dogshit all the time...buying good gear when you need to use the fuck out of it isn't blowing money...

You can get crust sound out of any amp really, just try turning the knobs. If you have 2 pedals that do distortion run one into the other for saturation.

As for cutting the cones, I had a 1x12 1x15 cab, ran a 26 watt fender musicmaster combo amp that was chopped in half and turned into a head with rack spaces. The 15 was sliced with razors for distortion and the 12 was still good for making the actual sounds. It will turn to mud and continue to rip if you run it all the time. This was all dumpstered out of a church basement studio bout 12 years ago. I miss my dumpster stack.....
