Recently the programmation of Quebec's biggest commercial punk festival, Rockfest, was published.
This year 3 anarcho bands, Discharge, Subhumans and Flag (ex black flag members), will be playing here and will share the scene with shitty bands like Transplants, Rise Against, Offspring, Rancid, Marylin manson, Lagwagon, Millencolin and many others.

The lowest tickets are sold at $90 and like other years tens of thousands of tickets will be sold which means millions of dollars of profits.
In 2011 and 2012, over 50,000 tickets were sold according to the organizers which means a total income of 4,500,000$ (not counting the income from the camping places they are also selling).
A few days ago they announced that they already sold 40,000 tickets in 2 days which means they will make even more profit this year.

This event try to look punk but in reality they are fucking commercial sellouts. It is a commercial event funded by the government and other capitalist companies, including banks. One of this year's biggest sponsor is Loto-Quebec, a government lottery organisation. They sell lottery tickets and machines and the income is used to fund the government and the State.

The event is also sponsored by the biggest bank in quebec, Caisse Desjardins. Needless to say this is very contradictory with the anarchist principles of Discharge, Subhumans and Flag.

Another very nasty sponsor is the right-wing populist radio station CHOI RADIO X. It is basically a very right-wing "trash radio". The radio hosts keeps spreading anti-leftish and anti-anarchist propaganda all day long. They have a very long history of left-wing bashing and they even used to interview neo-nazis activists and RAC bands. Last year they even stood against a show by a local anarchist band called Mise En Demeure and they wanted to force the cancellation of the event. Many of the radio's host have held hateful, racist and homophobic comments. They have received many condamnations.
Here in Quebec, anarchists and others have been fighting against them for a very very long time. There is even a coalition against them (Coalitions sortons les poubelles).

Other sponsors include many governmental organisations and other capitalist companies:
    - Budweiser
    - Jagermeinfter
    - Desjardins (biggest bank in quebec)
    - Naya - a bottled water company (watch the documentary FLOW to learn about this problem)
    - Canadian Heritage (government)
    - Canada government
    - Canada economic development for quebec regions (government)
    - Tourism Quebec (government)
    - SODEC quebec (government)
    - Culture Quebec (government)
    - CREO (an association of elected politicians)
    - Montebello municipality
    - Musique Plus (the quebec version of MTV)
    - V télé (right-wing TV station)
    - CHOI 981 Radio X + CHOI 919 Radio X (right-wing populist "trash radio")
    - Radio Pirate (another right-wing trash radio)
    - And many other businesses

So in other words, we have a big problem here: so called anarchist anti-state bands are playing a gig that will help to fund the government and the state and that is sponsored by right-wing radio and capitalist banks. Wtf ?

Recently there was a big scandal because some bands played at a show sponsored by Toyota. So what about this ?

Note that at this time we don't know if Subhumans and Discharge knew about the sponsors of the event or the list of the bands they were playing with. But this still need to be talked about.

We should ask the bands what they think about that. Maybe they were not aware of the sponsors list. I'd like to know what they think about that...

I'm with ungovernable on this point. Let's here their side of the story. It might be a way of getting their message out of more people. Kinda like taking one for the team. They might be doing it for money reasons.

    Bullshit excuse.

The only acceptable excuse is if they didn't know about it. And still, when you accept to play at a big festival like that, the least of things is to inform yourself about the event, the sponsors and the other bands you will play with. And this information is easy to find on internet.

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

Its a fucking stupid cop out, we have made some very unpopular decisions as a band by choosing not to play shows with any corporate sponsored bands, cancelling about 5 shows in the last year alone, but we stick to what we believe or why bother...

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

I'm not sure about Discharge but for Subhumans it is possible that they didn't know about it. I've talked with Dick few years ago, he seemed like a person of integrity and true to his anarchist values. Subhumans are supposed to be on Anarcho-Punk.net and they support free file sharing. Doesn't looks like a band that's in for the money.

But still... Bands should always be cautionous when accepting to be booked at big festivals. They should always look at the sponsor and the other bands they will be playing with. It's their responsability...

Yes, i agree, Dick lucas is a big inspiraition to alot of people i love Subhumans they inspired me with their music to become an active Anarchist and some of the songs of their album from the cradle to the grave inspired me and educated me of how religion suppresses and exploits people, they have also edcuated me about non conformativity it would make my heart break if they sold out........

Re: Discharge and Subhumans sold-out ?

I'm new to the site, but I'm going to speak nonetheless. First of all, I understand the gravity of an individual saying they represent a specific social/political (anarcho) stance and then go and do something that seems against their values (corporate funded concerts). It makes them appear hypocritical, fake, "sell out", etc. That being said though, I think that if this festival was coming to my town and I had the money, I'd be pretty stoked. Sure, there are shitty bands there, with shitty sponsors, but there are some great bands on there too. Certainly, I'd rather see Discharge in a small venue, but I assume most of these older bands have themselves and family to support, and that can't be done playing music in diy venues, vanning it across the country. 90 bux is steep, so sneak in. Steal some Budweisers. Burn down a bank promo ad. And go see Subhumans! Don't get butthurt because your favorite band is playing a festival you might not agree with. Maybe I'm wrong, but the criticism expressed here doesn't seem right either. It just seems selfish.

Anarchist values are all but selfish. Your arguments are shit to be honest, and if you don't see how wrong it is to play on a festival that is supported by a bank , a right-wing radio station and the Canadian government, then i just won't waste time explaining the basics of anarchism to you. And I don't really give a fuck if they have a family with 10 kids, 'we' all do and they are taking our money.
