REally really amazing documentary from 2001 about the Bougainville eco-revolution in the late 1980s. Started with the sabotage destruction of what was to be the world's largest copper mine by Bougainville peoples and formation of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army. War with Papua New Guinea ensued. PNG blockaded the island to try to starve the people out and they responded by planting their own crops, making their own weapons before gaining more as victory spoils and learning how to synthesize fuel from coconut oil/milk. Has been said to be the only seriously successful eco-revolution against a modern imperial power.

Francis Ona died in 2005 but the island gained it's autonomy and the BRA still essentially control the area, thought I think maybe under a different name. It's wasn't and is still not really covered by Western media, for reasons that may be obvious.
