maybe in australia or europe its different, but some of us live in places where violent crime is very high. In fresno in the last year their has been something like 5 shooting deaths every week, and even more injuries caused by shootings, and those are just shootings, dont even include other violent crimes. I have gotten my car stolen in march and its been broken into 3 more times since then. I have had my house broken in to, the venue here in town where my best friend lives at gets broken into at a regular basis. Every single night you hear automatic weapons. All im saying is that its easy to sit back and say guns, but some of us are in circumstances where we feel in danger and it isnt a bad idea to protect yourself

thats was an opinion based on the sum of a large portion of other opinions. in simplest terms, i believe once money and social skills are not an issue people wont need guns for anything, they will be hindering the growth of the individual (as they already are, but what i mean by that is in reference to the direct effect it would have on their physical life), not helping build them up like in our current state. people fight with violence because they are pissy idiots or uncapable of something, and theres lots of solutions to that.

I don't think every Individual should be in posession of a gun. Actually I think it would be best to get rid of them as soon as possible. Of course there would be people trying to impose a new state and restore capitalism by force. The people should be able to defend themselves. For such cases there could be training given to the people and guns stashed (and locked) in some sort of building. In case of counterrevolutionary actions of the far right/ liberals, the people could defend themselves. But I think giving everyone a gun would create more problems than it would solve.

Haha shit Ungov, all the right extremists and white supremacists already own like half of all the guns that exist.
Many I love being super ass late to threads.

Also totally think guns have a place in anarchist society. Have to break the state's monopoly on violence somehow. What better way to do it than obtain and learn how to use (but do everything in our power to not have to use) guns???

Also what's all this about an anarchist society replacing capitalism? Maybe if that society was nothing more thousands of small autonomous communities. Otherwise can you imagine the consensus process :ecouteurs:. But that's a topic for another thread I reckon.

i skimmed through the thread and all i got was basically a lot of really thin pro-gun arguments and some nitpicking on whether its really anarchy if you don`t let people have guns.
i don`t feel like i can add anything that hasn`t already been said, but its not that much different in europe, not central/southern/eastern europe anyway, i don`t know about the rest. guns might be illegal, but they still exist and they are still used, but not as much as in places where they are legal. its known and tested that if you ban something and don`t let anyone have it, its used less. common sense.

I've also skimmed the thread, so excuse me if I'm being repetitive.

First of all, while the US is the country with the highest gun-ownership and the highest crime rate, they don't seem to necessarily go together. There are considerably less gun-killings in Finland, Canada, and Switzerland than the US, all of which are countries with lots of guns. The US seems to be an anomaly as far as people killing each other, and guns don't seem to be a factor.

Second, I think ungovernable is right that one shouldn't sell a gun to a 10-year-old like candy. And my guess would be that no one would. If you're talking about a post-rev society then the profit motive is totally gone. There's no reason to give a 10-year-old a gun or to make any other irresponsible sales because the economy will have been totally reorganized to be based on need rather than demand or commodity fetishism. People will be able to act on their conscience rather than bend to market forces or forced economic ideologies. Isn't that the point?

Third, this is really a question of consistent anarchism. Is it consistent with basic principles of libertarian socialism to seize guns already held by individuals or workers? I would guess not, and you'd have a hard time convincing me otherwise. Now it may be consistent to have more accountability in the use of guns in a community, to set up social safety-nets around the distribution of guns without using coercive force or centralized bodies of power that have the final say. But you can't assume that everyone will want to just hand in guns (that they already have) or accept tighter authoritarian restrictions. To answer the question surrounding violent crimes we're going to have to approach it with a little more nuance and not equate violent crime with gun-ownership.

I think guns would absolutely have a place in any autonomous community. I assume there would not be the massive web of production we are used to, people would need the guns for hunting; I can't imagine a Wal-mart down the street from where we all live in this hypothetical situation. Guns are tools, they can be used responsibly. I think they are an integral part to an ideal self sufficient community.

In a future anarchist society where the people themselves makes up the rules I think (and hope) there would be less interest in guns & weapon industries etc. Ofcourse there will always be some American style gunloving rednecks, who lives in fear of almost everything except other American style gunloving rednecks, but they would probably not be welcomed, among others with fucked up racist/fascist, homofobic/sexistic tendencies.
    Peace.

Those guys are funny. The thing is, us "normal" people outnumber the "criminals", their arguments for having guns to protect their property(including their families) are really paranoid. Seems to me that most innocent lives are lost by the hands of the ones that own guns legally, mainly governments and their armies(and gunloving doomsday preppers).

Depending on where you live and what the situation is of course, I think they do have a place in an anarchist society, but I believe they would have a different status than they have today. There's a difference between protecting your private property and protecting your community and way of living against the ones that want to destroy it.

Gun control in the United States of Assholes

I live in the US, land of the free and all that propaganda, the powers that be drag us down every day ripping apart every thing that built this country! We used to stand for something now we stand for commercialism and a brand new car. Now that moron in the white house wants my guns, the one thing that stands between him and his dictatorship is the fact that more than three quarters of the populace own them(don't quote me on the percentage). What happens after they get all the guns, will it be enough, could it be your knives, will they outlaw wooden clubs? Man has killed each other for thousands of years before fire arms were invented and they will continue to do so until we no longer exist. I will take my weapons and use them to defend me and mine Fuck this society and all the religious and political sewage that comes with it. If your life style cause no harm to another then rock it, leave me be and I will do the same.

There is a backside to your "freedom" of carrying guns.
Children in the USA runs a 13 times higher risk to be killed by a shotgun than children in other rich countries.
Why don't we have school massacres elsewhere?
Do you think someone is making money on your fear?
Is the gun industry something to support?
Could it be easier to control people living in fear, for example, make them believe that you need to start war on "terrorism"?

Ahh, a voice of ignorance speaks, when they take my guns do you think that the criminal element won't still get their hands on them, maybe the government will give up their guns and we can all live in a happy lala world with fairies and unicorns. Wake the fuck up, when a child shoots themselves with a gun it's because they have no respect for it they have no idea what it can do, as a parent I will teach them what it can do and how to handle it safely. When they take your guns next will be freedom of speech, which they already infringe on, goodbye voice because no one can defend it, goodbye life liberty and the pursuit of happiness those will dreams that only the upper class can have. Welcome to the utopia of the the 1%, we are in a steep decline with no brakes and no way out stand your ground or die on your knees, the choice is yours, but hopefully when shit hits the fan you will act rather than bend nee to a fascist regime.
