Hey dudes. Browsed this forum for a short while and finally decided to just join. I'm currently producing my own zine, La Lucha!, which focuses on lucha libre (of all things). Just a generally big interest of me and a buddy. Also a really big fan of punk and metal. Usually stuff like Teenage Bottlerocket, Propagandhi, early Misfits...stuff like that. If any one else here is into making their own zines and what not, let's chat! Hopefully I'm a good addition to this forum.

and what the hell. Here's the facebook page I made for the zine yesterday: http://www.facebook.com/laluchazine

I've never personally been to any real events, but would kill to attend an actual match. El Santo is a legend! La Lucha is so much fun to watch. Just the basic plot of good versus evil. It's like someone took a comic book and just threw up onto a stage. Love every bit of it. And thank you for the welcome!

I bet if you just go south along the USA/Mexico border you will find them happening almost once a month or so... I hope some day you get to go to some and enjoy the culture :D

And you know HA this just came to me, peeps dress up all Black Bloc for protests theses days to go and march from point A to point B, fuck put on a Mexican Wrestling mask and get yourself a 70's style suite, that would be awesome.

Funny you should mention that. The kid who started this with me, we both just ordered authentic custom made masks from El Salvador. Should be here the end of this month.

Also if anyone here could point me to some wheat pasting resources, that'd be awesome. I have some large posters and cutouts is like to paste up in my city. A luchador mask would help with secrecy.

El Salvador?? Oh shit are the makers of mexican wrestling masks outsourcing the labor from mexico to el salvador?? Fuck :/

I saw a report resently about the peeps that sell "mexican" commodities to tourists, and they said the mexican blankets they sell in border town to tourists are made in china :/

Oh wow, i also remember something about maybe some sort of mask maker in el salvador or something that made all the masks, or maybe it was in mexico..

Hey did your research come up with how far down south Lucha Libre matches are actually part of the culture?? I mean in that they are occurring in the cities and people go and watch them...

does it reach into south america??

If you turned your zine into a PDF file i would love to check it out... :)

I most likely will be creating a .pdf of it at some point (I'm still waiting on two pieces of art from people), and then I'd like to distribute it physically through local establishments and/or actually handing them out to people on the street or leaving them in certain locales. As far as research goes Lucha libre is an international phenomenon that stems from Mexico. It's extremely popular in Mexico, with one of the most famous arenas being Arena Mexico in Tijuana. It's also extremely popular in other spanish speaking areas, I'm not sure EXACTLY where, but I do know of it being popular in Puerto Rico and El Salvador, as well as the US, Canada, Japan AND amazingly the UK (there's a branch of lucha libre-style of wrestling located in London).

Also, going back to the zine, if you'd actually like the physical copy (once it's done of course) feel free to contact me via email and I'll shoot one out to you free of charge. LaLuchaZine@gmail.com
