I don't mind when bands change their sound to try to gain a few fans if it's something they did out of their free will. Now if they did it because some guy in a suit told them to or else they won't get a shitload of $$$, well, that's another story. When I think of the word selling out I think of bands getting signed by sketchy record labels that exploit the fans.(Re:Scion and Magrudergrind.)
I'm not a musician, but I do visually art and sometimes I make things that are easier for the everyday Joe or Jane to look at in order to make a buck. Is that wrong? That I will paint stupid images of ducks with bowties instead of gnarly shit for money? It's not what I always want to create, but I put it out there and I do a good job of creating crap at least. Does any of this make sense?

Technically its ok to change your sound, i like when bands experiment, i like when a band has a new interest and wants to share it, but to change your ideals to suit others, to care more about there opinion, to focus on the money rather than the music you like is not cool. Music shouldnt be an easy way to get cash or to feed your ego. Some band members loved classic rock or another style but only found a gig workin in thrash so they gave in and joined, if did it for cash an had no real interest in the music they sold out before getting famous, to me selling out is censoring your work because people dont like your freespeech, selling out is cashing out your songs to be heard in itunes, burger king, call of duty and macys commercials (non profit so people can just hear the music is fine... Or for an organization you really believe in) selling out is sayin "i like heavy metal but everyone likes grunge, i must be liked, i must follow the crowd", to have fans or a following and sellin out seats isnt the same as selling out. I dont see henry rollins as a sell out because he sees himelf as below everything. He holds true to his core values, doesnt change for anyone but he will do the gig and its something to do. But you cant make him sell his morals like most bands easily waver.

I liked the question haha, Korn and AFI really sold out to!! Dupstep is the saddest shit iv ever heard, and when someone steals a sample of your instrumentals then remixes or raps over or fills it with loops thats horrible and i would never give someone permission to shit on it! As i see it if i had a famous band, go ahead, listen, play it wherever, and file share, dont worry about me coming to get royaltys for amything, i dont care, but dont mutilate dazed and confused by turning it techno.

Then if you look at who has the song credit, most shit that has sold out tends to be written by someone else, back in the 50s there was a song writer and a singer with a band who just plaued what they were told to, its the easy way if you cant write but ur hot or can write but are ugly and not going to be on the top 10's, look at LA Reid and what he "produces" pure sold out piss

Cocorosie said yes to a perfume company using one of their songs in a commercial, and that shit is the underground of the underground. The commercial didn't really do much for them, at least not here anyway, not that it was necessarily intended to do anything for them.
The only reason I'd find a band that plays a commercial song for burger king sketchy, is that its fucking burger king. That crap will be 100% generic. If they're that desperate to get money they can just find jobs.

And as for experimenting, I'm a little uncomfortable with it. Most of the time they completely lose their sound, and suddenly they're in a whole different genre. I can understand fans that dislike it or think it is selling out. But I guess selling out, for me, is going against your own principals for money, like Crass(or Steve Ignorant, I guess).

I'm going to say experimenting with your sound is cool as long as you're not doing it for money and you still acknowledge your roots. Green Day and Blink-182 are both sell-outs (Blink-182 now is almost electronic rock and Green Day is now pop-rock) but they still do make a few songs in their old style so maybe they're just experimenting with sounds and not doing it for the money (I'm being a bit of an optimist here LOL). As long as you still acknowledge your roots and not change your sound 100%, I'd say it's ok, but if you're just doing it for the cash and not because it's what you want to do, I have a problem with that.

You asked if its ever ok to sell out?
i say it can be,maybe to a certain point..not to be flthy rich but to keep a few bucks in your pocket..but im talking about artists who have children n families to support.
as someone said earlier, selling out your beliefs isnt the way to go though. :ecouteurs:

Right! To keep a few bucks in your hand as a small band living in the gutter, you have to survive, cant just starve, but like good charllottr in KFC commercials, or the singer from blink 182 having a commercial with everyone being a clone of him, i just lose my respect for them, when they change lyrics cus its mean or offensive i lose respect for, someone may not like it but you have to stand for what you believe in! Like i told Kat in private, if someone pays you to do a painting of republican symbols ok thats not selling out, but after painting and good reviews you dont go "well im not republican and i CANT stand what they believe but everyone seems to like my republican pictures so i guess ill just be a republican now" thats selling out! But its all individualistic to where to draw that line of sellout or putting your sound out there...

i honestly can't give a general or universal answer for whether "selling out" is okay or not. i can't think of all of the situations where one or a group might even consider it.
i've always put selling out on the same level as conforming. they're both the conscious and willful act of (for lack of a better phrase) doing what others want. and i've always thought of conformity being okay under certain situations. for example, if a person does what s/he wants for anyone but his/herself, but in the process conforms, i wouldn't see anything wrong with it. but if it's done to appeal to other's opinions (or to attract a wider, more generic audience in the musical sense), i'd think it wrong, especially in music. to me, music is an outlet used to express emotions, thoughts, ideas, etc... if you can score a decent amount of dough in the process, GREAT! but if you shift away from your roots, your foundations to appeal to people strictly to make more money, you've lost sense of why you started writing the music in the first place as well as my respect.

I don't tend to villainize professional bands, but trying to make a living and support your family while playing punk-rock is not only delusional, it is also missing the point. If you are a proper artist (or if you see yourself as such) then selling your art makes sense I guess. But playing punk-rock hardly qualifies as being an artistic endeavour (though, literally speaking, it is a form of art), on the contrary, the initial idea was to make music back from the self-proclaimed musicians while making a racket in the process.

Haha, yeah that was a real kick in the teeth that time by Discharge, but no, I don't think selling out is ok. It's not fair to your supporters, it's not good for your reputation and it's a betrayal to everything you've stood for.
