Hey so I know this isn't exactly a topic dealing with anarchism but this happened and it's pretty interesting.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TIr4z6Kacc&sns=em

Kind of old news but still crazy. Japan made a robot that can teach itself things through the internet. Next step they say is figuring out how to teach it morality.
So...robot consciousness? Anyone? You believe in it? I know I do.

Haha, I saw this really great documentary about the predicted outcome of an alien attack, we're screwed. I didn't know the UN actually has emergency plans for possible attacks though.

And on topic, that is pretty creepy and kinda cool. I feel sorry for the ones living in a capitalist country when they start using robots instead of workers though.

I doubt they'd ever become truly conscious or self-aware but their AI could mimic "feelings" of oppression or exploitation and as a logical consequence there may just be a robot revolution some day. ;)

It just makes me wonder what consciousness means at all. I mean I have trouble thinking of a way in which a human has consciousness that an intelligent robot couldn't achieve. It's really just the ability to recognize and respond to external stimuli, or stimuli within one's self. Robots are already capable of the former so if they can now learn I don't see how they could not have some level of consciousness.

Haha, oh I saw a documentary about that years ago, its called "from science to god" or something(edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHL5yLWd87w, its probably also available on the web), I think he dips into that. I don't remember much or who he is.

Thats a question you can spend years finding a good answer to, I think its difficult to define.

edit 2: Oh my god, all that crappy muzak. Where have all the down-to-earth philosophers gone.

Will their education be limited and controlled? Will the moral education be Capitalist Bourgeois Morality? Will the robots be allowed to read whatever they want? And to come their own conclusion and actions? Will they read "The Coming Insurrection?"

What if they realize they don't need humans to survive? And that humans are fucking up the world and each other? What will they do the the humans?

Will there be Anarcho Robot Insurrectionists?

Will they raise a new flag? The silver and black flag?

    GO GO BLACK BLOC ROBOT!

All very good questions! We should hijack the robots before they turn on the people, the elite can rot for all I care. We will wave our red, green, silver and black flags in unity!
But will they ever have a free will if they are conditioned to learn and react based on their experience and what they are taught? Don't humans react based on past experience? Do WE even have free will? aaah my whole world is crumbling before me. (Don't touch determinism when you're high, it might give you a permanent mindfuck).

So, I skipped through that bad excuse of a documentary, and summed up: humans are aware of their consciousness, he has a theory that there are different levels of consciousness although he talks about it as if it was a fact. That belief is heavily based on various new age crap, and awakening through meditation and all that stuff rich, eccentric aunts like.
Animals are conscious, we are aware that we are conscious=we have a higher level of consciousness.

Damn, plants are conscious! Haha, we've had those discussions before of whether we have free will or not and that's a question that philosophers have been debating forever.
How can you limit their learning if they are programmed to learn through the internet? They'll just learn everything there is to learn or until their memory is full. Their actions will be controlled by some kind of protocol to prevent them from harming humans but if they become so intelligent, they should be able to override any protocols.
What freaks me out more are these nanobots that will be able to replicate themselves and "go viral" :o
Haven't you watched the matrix? They'll use us as batteries, haha.

    Haha!

Nanobots are creepy. Was there talk about them being used in warfare?
And on your "plants are conscious too"-post; Yeah, it is a pretty big question! but its too easy to turn to religion to explain it(Peter Russell). If it is beyond comprehension you can't really explain it using ancient belief systems, or our concept of reality.

Well, yes, doesn't having a consciousness require being able to make your own decisions?
    D:
