Hey I encounted these two books which have brought attention to me wild foods growing in urban areas. alot of the "weeds" growing in that empty lot across the street are actually edible. check out the reviews.

    http://www.amazon.com/Edible-Wild-Plant ... ild+plants
    http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Garden-Id ... res+garden

both books are unique because they focus on the most common edible wild foods and go into depth about them versus other books which can be very undetailed and list a ton a plants that casual foragers probably wont encounter.

There's stacks of wild plants out there we can eat, suprisingly, but alot of them are pretty bland or bitter. Fruit trees and shrubs are great tho, can do a fine harvest in late summer/early autumn. I would be cautious regarding anything growing in too densly populated areas due to polution/toxins/etc in the plants absorbed thru the roots and leaves from car exhaust in particular. Forrage in the country for healthier and more readilly available food.

I'd be very wary about eating wild plants in cities. Filthy places. Outside them though, as long as you're away from heavy traffic and industry, it should be fine.

Abandoned railways actually make good places to find edible weeds, cities included. They sit forever and are super overgrown usually. Plus a lot of railroads are built on raised ground or in untouched areas of cities so the toxin risk isn't so high.

Loads of plants are edible, but if you're foraging, rather than cultivating them yourself, correctly identifying them can be tricky. There are many plants that have lookalikes that are poisonous, and this is even truer of fungi! If you’re thinking of getting into foraging, why not chat with some locals who have experience – they usually know the best places to look and are often keen to share their knowledge.
