I don't work, I'm on disability for many many many health issues. Since I'm an anarcho-communist, I have no objection to accepting social programs. I get something like $1500 a month, I spend $850 a month on rent, about $150 a month on food, then I have $300 for concert tickets and weed. If possible I say try to get on a disability program, it's pretty damn sweet.

 

dddaamnn you get 1500 a month for disability!! i was on disability a while back too and i proobably got 400 something a month if i was lucky, not much to survive off of, i had to do under the table jobs

 

I'm in Canada and it's because of (anxiety, mild autism, bipolar and chronic pain). I'm actually from the province with the first socialist government in North America. (We had the first universal health care in North America too). Now my province is run by neo-conservatives (damn farming community )

I'm a disability too.. But I get $170 at a month. I know that it's so few, but with such a money can living in my town with prolems. However I can't traveling and visit other cities at outward of Siberia.

 

I work for one of the top ten biggest produce companies in the world. i waas sick of not knowing anything about produce companies except for the more common knowledge of monsanto. I have learned a lot and it is heartbreaking to witness the other employees attitudes on the company (which is usually pro corporate farming). I may quit soon. not sure. I want to get more involved with a punk scene somewhere.

Holy crap, I'm sorry to hear! Your boss being able to fire you just for speaking your mind is completely insane.

I'm unemployed, I can't find any jobs. Worked in a frame shop last year(we built the frames) but I quit. That's the only grown up job I've had, I've volunteered since i was 15 but apparently that doesn't count.

 

Also sorry to hear that punkmar. I've also worked as an extra in movies. They pay quite well sometimes.

 

Right now I work for a pizza place, let's just say it's not a Mom & Pops business.
I get disgusted at how much food is thrown out at night, if there was a dumpster diving group in my area they would have it made. We are allowed to give old unwanted pizza to people who look 'authentically' homeless as long as it doesn't happen most than once a month (my managers way of doing charity I guess) but that doesn't make up for the waste.
I am in the process of transitioning into veganism, and I also try to eat organic as much as possible due to my disdain of Monsanto and company... But I work with the shit I want to avoid.
But I'm young and trying to learn as much skills in the meantime so I don't have to work there long.

Alright so I'm sitting here on break from work and I just writes list labeling the reasons why im working right now. I came up with "build up savings"...that's it. But how the fuck can I make savings on 10$/hour at 25-30 hours a week? Should I get a second job? Should I join a union? What the fuck am I doing. Fuck retail. Sorry, I'm whining.

I feel you. I got out of prison and the only parole plan that was approved for me was to go back to my dad's house. My dad is the type of person who would vote for bush again if he was able. I'm also in Houston,texas. This is a terrible place for anyone who doesn't know. For a person who was a street kid and then a convict for the better part of their teenage/early adulthood, America is a bad place to be. It was hell finding a job, and when I found one it was pretty much exact to what your making and the hours you're getting. I struggle with the same type of indignation, only my incentive is my cage. See, my traveling buddy and I were locked up together on the same beef. Over the course of the 3 years we were locked up,we decided that the only way we could ever be together was to get married. Now, she lives in MD because Texas wouldn't let us live together. I have also been on house arrest for 6 months, making even simple things like going to a job interview difficult. I have always had strong anti- capitalist sentiments, but this experience has really raised my hackles. I am literally sitting front row to the disgusting display of our culture. Granted, I have become militant and scholarly in my goals and activism (whereas I used to just drink under bridges and rant) but it is tough. The best advice (though I really don't like giving advice) is to just don't forget that shit. Don't put your head down and just resign to your "fate." You are lucky that you aren't forced into a life of indentured servitude and second-class citizenship. Do what you have to do to maintain yourself,but never be afraid to pick up a book and tell the next asswipe that Harry Potter isn't literature and rush Limbaugh isn't a political philosopher.

whizzkvydic, I'm 73 and I was a street kid too. I avoided prison, but I was in a nuthouse when I was a teen. Still, I consider myself fortunate to have been confronted early with truths that some people never see. Some of the best people I've ever met were once street kids and/or convicts. Life has many frustrations, but it's a lot better to know why than to always wonder why. I hope you keep us posted on how things are going.

 

Thanks alot man. It feels good to get kudos from someone with as many years as you. Your right, it is better to know. It gets incredibly difficult for people like us with spotted histories. I can't imagine what it was like when you were my age... (the 50's were basically the pinnacle of "everything is fine and dandy,we'll stop those dirty commies from raping your daughter and stealing your car" so I imagine difference wasn't handled very kindly...) when someone gets out of prison, they tell them "just keep your head down,don't cause any trouble,find a job and be a productive member of society." I was in the deep south so add "find a good church and support group" to that. In this country, people who are eccentric,artistic, or just plain capable of independent thought are viewed as dangerous and morally "wrong." When you have commited a crime against the state, you are more or less expected to live a life of humble contrition. The same goes for the "mentally ill." Actually, it's something like 80% of prisoners in the US have some kind of mental disorder... I often think of Amebix's "largactyl." "They release you from the hospital,you're 'cured'. So this is how freedom feels?"
