Just noticed this... be willing to bet there aren't a whole lot of leather wearers here, being that I would estimate the majority of users here are vegan/ vegetarian... as far as the punk title... frankly i am not a fan of the word. I don't like labels at all. too many subdivisions and dividing lines already. -the anxietist
hey... the more studs you have the more punk cred you get!!! 3 3-studded belts, 1 bullet belt and a jacket studded at every inch = PPPPUUUUUNNNKKKK RROOOOOCCCKKKK!!!!
you're totally right to challenge punk in this way. i don't think punx should be defensive about this. we do, in fact, dress (more or less) similarly. we do, in fact, alienate people who don't. we do, like all scenes, get petty over musical and subcultural differences. these are generalizations, of course, but they are relevant nonetheless. i'm a punk, i can't really escape that i guess. i listen to punk and go to shows and appreciate how punk has popularized lots of anarchist traditions and ideas. but there's a lot wrong with it, we mimic mainstream society like any other scene. we have to deal with that instead of pretending we are different because we wear circle a's.
We do have our own inter-scene prejudices, it's true. I personally think D-Beat is ridiculous. I could go on at length but I don't wana upset anyone who listens to that NONSENSE I'm just muckin around but aye, our mode of dress has positives and negatives and we probably do judge people based on it, which is just silly. Just don't take it all too seriously and you'll be fine.
O> i didn;t read this two! This is really really happy to me. Because i believe a LOT and identify extrodinarly with a lot of punk's ideals and i DO listen to punk, but you know, not as much and i definately do not know as much. But it makes me kina sad cos i'm like you know, as pathetic as it sounds, there's a lot of potential in discussion shit with people who relate especially with a community of people who are capable to talk about things and who most of them have serious and great opinions on different subjects; which is precisely WHY i don't understand where the clothes come in. I've been to some shows where it was just like "Fuck this" because suddenly i'm some kind of twat for not wearing 20.00 dollars worth of metal from china.
I have a studded vest with A LOT of studs on it a few years ago. It's still my favorite item of clothing. Although I do know what everybody is getting at here, kids who spend waaaaaayyyyyy too much money on "punk" clothes. Personally, I've always made my own patches, and sewed them on by hand. I just love DIY.
I know watcha on about, a stupid system creates stupid people but the thing is they ain't stupid, its them who we fight for if we got smarts.
probably you've seen only kids.they'll grow up and will be different.it's normal to look in a way when you're a kid, you need to be accepted. it's just a phaze.
alot of people i know have grown out of the way they dress (Punk, skin, whatever) They usually do (if they do at all) around their mid 20's to 30's But all of them still support the scene, listen to the music, and have the same ideals.
