Crass is dead. they predicted what happened here in "5 knuckle shuffle" but its not just about them, its about us. the validity of the stamp itself still works for me considerably in some areas. try and apply the stamp somewhere else with its brand new meaning. the self containing paradox of this so called peace of personal blight against self through angry means. waiting to one day shove everyone that believes or cares for it with the same convenience as that wich they latched onto it for. it may not be you but its there. take a look at any particular song and slap it on the face of our brand new so called "leaders" or media identies. tell me its not alike with its expensive irony. aside from some obviously expired tracks. it is now a map for the cheap psychological games and new liberties being played on us every day and take a look at how it turned out with us, the punks or the recurring youth movement on our own with no rule as the first rule. i could assume for most the crass ideals did not change the world like they sound like they will. it became another facet for us to be pitted against the rest of the world as the angry ones on the other end when, like we all know, we are a part of the world, not apart from it. life happens in front of you not theoretically. so i enjoy the above picture, marching with the riot cops. it just goes to show whose side we are all on. Peace, blind to the innocence of all those marching on every side. even corrupt, it still stands the test of time as one of the ultimate peace symbols, but in a different right now, it brings us peace in being the face of a shared corruption.

Ha! I've got Crass' trademark symbol tattooed on my shoulder (doesn't matter, I still believe in what it stands for.)

Nope, that won't do. I'm afraid we'll have to amputate. Sorry about that but I'm sure you understand you can't possibly live with a capitalist and traitorous shoulder. :ecouteurs:

I know I'm late to this but... for me, Crass died in '84. And, while the stuff that's happening now certainly sucks like shit, I think going after them collectively is overly ingenuous. Let's find out who is directly responsible and act accordingly. Anonymous... Assemble!

As a side note about representation, I have some Crass patches and shit that I've made over the years and I've downloaded their music and enjoy it, both aesthetically and for the message. I kind of feel that, though I certainly won't support future endeavors by them (monetarily or otherwise), that their current actions don't invalidate what they were, in the same way Chumbawumba's newer stuff doesn't really impact my opinion of their old shit. If the reverse were true, I'd be more cynical (if they went from say, a disco band to an anarcho-punk act).

Certainly, it is sad when a strong voice for positive change in the world gets co-opted or silenced, but personally, I don't think that retroactively invalidates everything they've ever done. In my reckoning, once someone produces an artistic artifact that was intended for an audience, it becomes society's by default, so it's up to us to reclaim that if we are so inclined and keep it for US. It's nothing new, we just have to subvert more shit, re-contextualize it, or make something new to replace it.

    Just my two cents.

While on the subject of anarcho-punks gone terribly awry. Are there any other of the "big ones" (or otherwise) that have totally destroyed their legitimacy in the way that Crass has with this whole load of shit? Conflict, Subhumans, Flux of Pink Indians, Discharge, Rudimentary Peni, etc? This whole Crass thing has seriously ruined me on all my Crass records, and I'm starting to look seriously into the other bands mentioned above to make sure I'm not supporting some turn-coat pieces of shit. I mean, shit! I'm waiting to find out that Colin Jerwood eats hamburgers while vivisecting his pets.

No man, all those bands are gold other than Discharge loosing their minds for a couple of years when they turned into some weird goth/hair metal band...but they snapped out of it and they never sold out...

Hah! Thanks. I knew about that period of weirdness Discharge went through. I'll sleep easier knowing I'm somewhat safer when it comes to the other bands mentioned.

You'd probably be dealing with multiple lawsuits after putting out such a compilation. :lmao:

I refuse to remove my Crass patch and destroy their albums. Why should I? Just because Ignorant "sold out"? I didn't get into them because of Ignorant, I got into Crass because of Penny and his ideology. He pretty much wrote all the songs. Steve even admitted that in their documentary on Crass. It's Steve's voice but Penny's words and ideas. ( Though, I still think Steve's voice was perfect for the band when he was younger) In fact, if I'm not mistaken, Steve was the only original member on that tour Crass had. The rest of the band wanted nothing to do with him. So, in my opinion, screw Steve, not Crass.

Penny also sold out. He changed his mind after critising Steve's reunion your and gave him full support. He's also supporting the repressing of crass albums. Also read crassunofficial.com to find out he support crass copyright and even threatened to sue other members,

Wearing a Crass patch in 2012 for what it used to stand for is like wearing a Skrewdriver patch for what it stood for before they became nazis.

After this whole story, i threw a lot of crass stuff to the garbage. Still have some patches to remove...

Meh, it really depends on the context. After reading the entirety of this thread a couple times over. I've come to the following conclusions:

    1) Do what you want, Crass created a symbology that can be applied beyond the narrow scope of their (whoever 'they" are now) current endeavors. It's not like any of us are making money or making THEM money from using the Ouroboros w/ doves or whatever, and it's not like the albums they recorded back in the day suddenly say something different just because some of them turned into fucking rotters.

    2) DO WHAT YOU THINK IS APPROPRIATE. Crass can't be denied its due place in the development of anarcho-punk and honestly (though I'm not trying to turn this into some apologetic for them resting on their laurels and raking in the cash), they have done a FUCK of A LOT more than most people on these forums for both anarchy and so-called 'punk rock.'

    3) Do what motivates you. Rather than dwelling on the past, rather than lamenting the recuperation of what had become something of an icon for non-conformity, anarchy, rebellion, etc. PUSH THINGS FORWARD. If the old Crass (and just about every other good anarchist and/or punk band) had anything of value to teach, it was that iconographies inevitably become anachronisms and must be recontextualized, subverted, extended, and perhaps even torn down, to made way for emerging deeper truths.

Comparer Crass et Skrewdriver, il faut quand même oser...

Don't you think you are being a little hyperbolic here? I understand that you are angry with Crass and whoever was involved in the closing down of your mediafire account. I would be angry and disappointed if a band asked for my account to be suspended as well. But, you are making a parallel between a band whose message was one of thinking for one's self, questioning everything, of subversion and anger, to a literal nazi band on account of the suspension of a mediafire account.

If ideas are supposed to be bulletproof, then surely the legacy of Crass is immune to the bullshit of some ex-members of the band. I guess it doesn't really tarnish their legacy, though I wouldn't obviously go to one of their gigs or buy the new cd's and I agree they have become a sad parody of themselves. But does it tarnish what they used to stand for? In the end, the message belongs to all of us.

A bit off-topic maybe, but from what I have seen on other countless blogs, mediafire cannot be trusted either. I have read many stories of suspended mediafire account for copyright infringements and apparently, at times, mediafire does automatically whithout even bands asking for it or without any warning. I am still using it for my blog but I am seriously thinking of using something else as I have already had two strikes...

    Allez, sans rancune ungov. ;)

Isn't witch hunting just time consuming and useless? serious, it just happened, and we all know it's shit that happened, but can't we all just get on with it? anarchism and the "scene", it's not necessarily about music (at all), music is just a small part of it.

while of course, bands like anti-flag earn money like shit, they've at least done some serious(=good) stuff with it. one could argue, thats not better than bill gates giving away "only" 100 million dollars for starving children in africa while sitting on a billion dollar heap of money, but it's certainly better than McDonalds killing the rainforest for profit (hope you get that one :p ).
maybe, even bands like anti-flag or rage against the machine are involved and in fact needed in the social movement of today, it's just a different level than "real" anarchist bands playing/preaching for the converted (this is not bad anyway, because its part of our culture, and a movement without a culture is a bit boring, sure?) and participating in protests (and whatnot else). they're raising awareness. they're engaging in social actions. they're not anarchists, but hey, they're not nazis either! i don't think being close-minded helps while building/creating alternatives. like during the spanish revolution, there might be a point when we have to leave our position of total opposition (our "ideological comfort zone") to get the things going...

I have no problem wearing crass patches, for it says way more than just "i am a patch of crass, the famous anarcho band of the 80ties! and i am soooo anarcho!".
