Odd question, I've been into punk for a long time but have never understood the fascination with bm, pretty much every punk I've met loves the shit, what's up with that?
I understand punks liking music other than punk... but bm? It seems so anti-punk with all the songs of being grim and frostbitten and burning churches in clown paint and all that jazz...

Anywhooo, this is my first post so... HELLO MY NAME IS JAMES :ecouteurs:

i think it´s more a musical connection, first wave of BM was influenced by thrash metal and bands like Discharge, in terms of lyrics BM was more dumb, but i think that currently there are bands with good lyrics and a more intelligent message.

While I am often flabbergasted at some punk's love for black metal (a genre that either puts me to sleep or makes me cringe), it is true that early bm bands like Venom, Hellhammer or Bathory had quite an influence on the first crust wave. This said, the current trend of punk bands playing black metal or taking influences from the later waves (the ones with costumes on) leaves me cold on the most part. There is a decent blog called Red and Anarchist Black Metal that has satan-free bands with sound lyrics if anyone is interested.

I like Black Metal because it sounds good. Derp. Then I listen to sub-genres like DSBM and "post-black" because it provides an emotional landscape that I can relate to and take part of.

One thing that annoys me though is how Nazis are trying to take over the genre. Fuck 'em. :anti-nazi:

Red and anarchist black metal? I'll have to check that out, cheers!
I do quite enjoy that cold sound of bm, but the lyrics... :ecouteurs:
