"Against Me! lead Tom Gabel came out as transgender in the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine. The article states that Gabel has been privately dealing with gender dysphoria for years and will soon begin the process of transition via hormone and electrolysis treatments. Gabel eventually plans to take the name Laura Jane Grace and remain married to her wife Heather.

Rolling Stone has signified this as the first time a major rock star has come out openly as transgender. In the preview article Gabel reflects on the impact of the revelation: "I'm going to have embarrassing moments, and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

The full story on Gabel's transformation will be in the issue of Rolling Stone available Friday, May 11th."

"No, I won't take your hand and marry the state..."

I accept that this is brave thing to do and respect him/her being so open about it.

That quote doesn't oppose marraige itself, but opposes marrying a Liberal, who is just a part of the "State". When I was a young teenager I thought the same, but a little critical thought of the lyrics leads you elsewhere. Anyways, I do think Laura has suffered through gender dysphoria for a long time, but it has caused her to write amazing songs. No matter what I will still remain a fan, even if she gave up on anarchism herself.

Uhm I applaud her decision to be who she really is...but since when do we give a fuck about rock stars? I must have missed the memo....

Do you think? I would think an opposition to state marriage to be a fairly anarchist sentiment (a la Blissful Myth by Rudimentary Peni). I didn't think there was much ambiguity but then, if I'm honest, I've never liked the band and only listened to the song a handful of times and not with any real, deep consideration. In truth, it was the only song I even remotely enjoyed and even then I found the sentiment a bit superficial, as if anarchism was in-vogue. But then, as the music didn't sit with me, it probably tainted my perception.

I remember hanging out in front of the "Farewell to DIY" Against Me gigs a couple of years ago. The thing was just ridiculous. It was - already - packed with hipsters. They should have called it "Welcome to the multinationals owned music scene. Thank you DIY, fuck you and good-night". They really are shameless.

Yeah, I don't think he identifies as punk anymore, even. It's been a long, long time since I have classified him as such. I still like his music, though. So shoot me.

I say good for her. As for her music never got into it, sounds like I did not miss much as she "sold out".
But oh well I could care less about her music I am more concerned with her sexual dysphoria. I wish her the best.
On a economic note: her being wealthy sure will help with all that rather expensive sexual reassignment work to be done. I bet a neovaginoplasty ain't cheap these days...
On a pop culture note: maybe her openness about her sexual dysphoria might help to farther mainstream public acceptance of LGBT people & issues.
But I kinda doubt it tho....

I've always looked up on Tom Gabel. What a wonderful personality, how awesome her voice! I'm glad she came out as a transgender, good for her :)
I applaud her for doing so. Keep punk-rocking!

People make this kind of change all the time. Don't act like this person is some kind of hero now

Against Me!'s first album is really, really good shit, regardless of the "sell out" music is.
