Protesters Charged With Terror Conspiracy-they tried to make Molotov cocktails

CHICAGO — Three men arrested earlier this week when police raided a Chicago apartment were being held on terrorism conspiracy charges Saturday stemming from allegations that they tried to make Molotov cocktails ahead of the NATO summit, but the first major dress rehearsal of this weekend's large-scale protests was relatively peaceful.

Chicago police Lt. Kenneth Stoppa said the men face a bond hearing later Saturday on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support. Stoppa identified the men being held as Brian Church, 20, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Jared Chase, 24, of Keene, N.H.; and Brent Vincent Betterly, 24. A police spokesman gave Betterly's hometown as Oakland Park, Mass., but no such town exists. There is an Oakland Park, Fla., that is near Fort Lauderdale.

Their attorney, Sarah Gelsomino, told The Associated Press the men are "absolutely in shock and have no idea where these charges are coming from."

Six others also arrested Wednesday in the raid of the South Side apartment where they were staying were released Friday without charges being filed.

One of those protesters, Occupy activist Darrin Annussek of Philadelphia, denied there were Molotov cocktails in the apartment or that raw materials had been compiled to make them.

"No way," Annussek said. "If I had seen anything that even resembled (a Molotov cocktail), I would have left."

He claims that during 18 hours in custody, police never told him why he was arrested, read him his rights or allowed him to make a phone call. He said he remained handcuffed to a bench, even after asking to use a restroom.

"There were guards walking by making statements into the door along the lines of `hippie,' `communist," `pinko,'" a tired-looking Annussek told reporters just after his release.

Stoppa declined to elaborate on the case beyond confirming the charges.

Security has been high throughout the city in preparation for the summit, where delegations from about 60 countries, including 50 heads of state, will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.

Among the pre-NATO protests planned for Saturday was a march on the home of Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The big show will be on Sunday, the start of the two-day NATO summit, when thousands of protesters are expected to march 2 1/2 miles from a band shell on Lake Michigan to the McCormick Place convention center, where delegates will be meeting.

On Friday, Chicago police on bicycles and foot tailed activists through the streets of the city, but ignored taunts and went out of their way to make as few arrests as possible. Protesters made a lot of noise and tried to evade police, but otherwise were relatively uneventful.

In all, police said there was a single arrest on a charge of aggravated battery of a police officer. Another man was briefly taken into custody, but he was released a short time later after being questioned by police, a department spokesman said.

Also, officers were seen trying to arrest a man who scaled a bridge tower and pulled down part of a NATO banner. Earlier, police handcuffed a man at the end of a noisy but largely peaceful rally organized by the nation's largest nurses union.

From the police side of the protest line, it went largely how Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy envisioned it earlier this month when he said, "We're not going to lock somebody up for dropping a banana peel."

Michael Olstewski, 22, a recent music school graduate who came to Chicago from Atlanta, one of hundreds of protesters who took to the streets on Friday for a spontaneous march, said protesters may be waiting to make a big statement. He said he didn't do anything to get arrested Friday, "but later in the week ... If I feel it's strategic and a powerful statement" he would provoke police into arresting him.

Nor were some protesters particularly surprised that police exhibited restraint even when they acted in ways that might have gotten them arrested – like the dozens of protesters who sat in the street for a short time before they got up and left after one of them, Micah Philbrook, grabbed a bullhorn and told them to leave.

In fact, at one point, on the bridge at Michigan Avenue, the gateway to the city's famed shopping district, the Magnificent Mile, the number of officers swelled and officers appeared to be poised to forcibly remove the protesters from the area. Instead, they simply waited while the protesters left on their own.

Observers said that police showed restraint during the day that included the sight of hundreds of protesters breaking away from a large rally, march through the streets and taunt police as well as shouting about everything from bank bailouts to nuclear power.

"I think the police are handling themselves very well," said Jennifer Lacy, a freelance videographer and editor from Chicago who took pictures of the spectacle with her cell phone. "It seems like they have it all organized, and it doesn't seem their tempers are going to be easily flared. I think they're mindful we're going to be on the world stage."

But Ben Meyer, a Chicago lawyer who was observing the protest for the National Lawyers' Guild, denounced what he called an excessive police presence at Friday's rally, which included dozens of officers milling through the crowd and lining the perimeter, some of whom were videotaping the rally.

"It's frustrating the state needs to come out and show this much force for a nurses' rally," he said. "They have everyone from the superintendent on down here. It's just ridiculous."

Members of National Nurses United were joined by members of the Occupy movement, unions and veterans at the rally, where they demanded a "Robin Hood" tax on banks' financial transactions. The event drew several thousand people and featured a performance by former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, an activist who has played at many Occupy events.

Deb Holmes, a nurse at a hospital in Worcester, Mass., said she was advocating for the tax but also protesting proposals to cut back nurses' pensions.

"We've worked 30 years for them and don't want to get rid of them," she said.

Yeah I called the NLG, National Lawyer's Guild, in Chicago and they said just keep taking pictures of my wound every few days or so, so I'm going to have my roommate or neighbor photograph my head wound. Thank you so much for showing me that photo! The NLG was asking me if I could find a photo of that cop in the action of doing that again. Some black bloc guy with dreads who stayed at the hostel I stayed at was sooo excited when he first saw me, he couldn't wait to show me some of the photos he was checking out on a forum. I still can't find those photos, but I imagine there was a hurricane of photographs that came out during this shit storm. Let me know though if you find anymore man, please? I'll try and post photos of my head wound soon. Maybe one every two days :)

If it helps, I'm all way the way in OC California, I just spent a good amount of time leaving angry voicemails to CPD. No threats of course, I'm not stupid, but I tried calling the gang control hotline, turns out it's disconnected, so I called the firearms hotline, got voicemail (you would think cops in Chicago would care more about that shit) and spend the first 2 minutes about how I tried to contact the gang control line, and I couldn't, and how I witnessed terrible gang violence over the weekend, including members openly carrying firearms and threatening innocent peaceful people. Soon after I said, Yes, I've seen the videos of CPD's misconduct, and shame on all of you. Not a big action, I know, but the best I can do from my house thousands of miles away.

Btw, mad props Anarchoskin, and mad cons anarcho4life. Anarcho4life, have you ever been on the front lines staring well armed militarized riot police in the face, knowing that soon you're going to feel very hurt, and sucking it up for the sake of revolution? I don't like to assume, but judging by your posts, I think not. Don't talk down on Anarchoskin for doing something you've never had the bravery to do. I've taken a baton, to the leg mind you, and that sucked enough, I can't even begin to image one to the head.

EDIT* I tried calling the mayor. The city said they don't do that. I phoned Jean Qoun often after Oaklands mistreatments, regardless if she ever listened to my voice message or not. I like how homeboy isn't even accepting calls. Fuck that noise.

This is in reply to anarchoskin69 and punkmar77.

What does violence lead to? If Anarchist go in and just start burning, breaking, and tearing down things then what is it going to accomplish? I want to know. If you have the answers to everything then I want to know the answer to this? What do you suggest we do to break the chains that bind humanity to something that wants to use them for their own personal gain? Do we go in and smash things that have nothing do to with the objective? Yes, let us go and smash a parking meter or a stop sign. That will accomplish so much. Are you saying that what has already been built can't be rebuilt, and that no one is going to get beaten or shocked? I bet you two a fucking hypocrites. You say something like "War is Murder" or something like that but then you want to go out and start violence that will lead to nothing but bloodshed, and the bloodshed being mostly on our part.

The pigs/government are the ones with the weapons, and what do we have? The one weapon that is more powerful then any gun or tazor out there. We have our minds. We have the intelligence, and we need to us it. I have read the articles on the Anarchist Writers web page. They show that we are not a bunch of underclass, mindless douche bags, unless you want to portray yourself as one. And when I say underclass I mean a dumb fucking idiot with not a single brain cell.

If you want to go out there and argue with a policeman then fine. Are they going to listen to you? No. We need to educate the rest of the population. We need to show the rest of the world what the governments are doing to them. Don't limit ourselves to just the internet. No, not every person is going to listen to us, but if we can get to 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 people to listen and understand what we are saying then that is an accomplishment, in my eyes at least. Yes, go out and protest. Yell what you have to say. Don't let the pigs have their way, but at the same time don't start the fight. Show that the pigs are the violent ones, and we are just there to voice ourselves.

So what I guess I am trying to say is that if you are going to be a violent fuck that wants to live in the 15th or a later century and think that violence solves everything then fine. Go be that douche bag that gives the Anarchist a bad stereotype. Violence should only be used when needed. I am not the type of person that lets people push me around, but at the same time I am also not the kind of person that will go out and punch the closest guy in a suit. I am a middle finger in the air the the governments of the world. I do not bow down to them. Just remember this. Knowledge is power. Unnecessary violence is weakness.

And as for the clown picture. It was just something that popped up when I googled NATO Summit 2012 Black Bloc. That is weird. Why the hell would that come up I don't know, but I guess some people don't have a sense of humor. I will remember that next time.

Who said I punched the riot cop? And if I did, they were already hitting people with batons anyways. I would say you sound "like" a liberal, but from what you're saying you ARE actually a liberal. Go back to the voting booth you fucking loser.

All we wanted to do was head East, all the liberals said "Everyone disperse peacefully to the west", but Obama and the rest of world leaders were East. So some kids in all black wanted to march down some streets, I deserved an open head wound that required staples? I got a chant for your voting booth, you fucking liberal, "Less marching, more staples!" "Work within the system!", ahhh fuck it, you probably didn't even get those jokes. Fuck you peace police.

Your calling a guy that has a very short fuse the peace police? Didn't I say violence should be used when needed? I never said it should be put on the shelf and forgotten about. I also never said YOU deserved anything. As long as YOU don't start it then OK. Let the world see who the violent ones are. That way they can see who the real "bad guy" is. Do you get what I am saying? We all have different tactics on how we do things. I like making people look foolish by making them do it to themselves. I don't need to call someone out on it when they are the ones calling attention to it. It's that simple. I also said go out and protest. I didn't say stay at home and stare at the wall. Keep on marching. Keep on carrying the banner, but let the pigs fuck up and make themselves look like the idiots. Get the cop off your friend if you need to, and keep up the fight.

You're a real prize there guy...you have a smash the state avatar then you talk mad shit on black bloc anarchist protesters...now you want to back peddle...well fuck you. Adversity of tactics including all of the things you've stated and all of the things you supposedly hate about the black bloc are what's needed..not you being a fucking judgmental asshole and thinking you have all the answers and only your way is a valid approach to anarchism. The world already knows who the 'bad guys' are, if they want to lump in the black bloc anarchists and consider them all bad too, then so be it, as far as I'm concerned I'd rather not have those type of non-thinking people rooting for me anyway...we're not in the business of recruiting anarchists or public relations.
