Kinda new here and just got back into listening to a lot of punk after a few years of enjoying other music.

    Question:

I'm just curious about whether there are well known punk bands/ members that actually take the time, money, energy to support causes and to try to help out. With the recent Occupy Wall Street movement, I thought that some famous faces would emerge but I have yet to see any evidence.

Is this one reason why "famous" punk bands are irrelevant now?

Take punk bands from Epitaph Records ( the record label prior to the 2000s), which have became well known, and which I grew up listening to, do any of them actually go out and try to make a change? I know some of them have to put food on the table for their families, but something of activism would be expected.

Any bands i know of, that "walk the walk" as you say, aren't really known outside of the punk/metal community.

Well, if you're talking about bands from Epitaph you're talking about a different kind of punk. They all belong to a scene where activism is not expected and sometimes either inappropriate or looked upon poorly.

Plenty of punks in small, local scenes built around dumpster diving, recycling, freeganism, squatting, direct action, art, communal activity, counselling, sharing, musical experimentation, reading, cooking, building... they walk the walk. I'd say thousands upon thousands. All of us here on the fringes of the underground, despite the occasional loser, are doing our darnedest to save the world.

Who cares if the rock stars wave the banner or not? We don't need them.
